Ministry of Advanced Education approves exciting new KPU BA degree

Metro Vancouver, BC – After three years of development, Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) is proud to announce the addition of a BA Major in Political Science to its roster of over 200 programs.

Launching for the first time this fall, the new degree will offer unique courses in Canadian and North American politics and International Relations, all of which are designed to develop students’ skills in public debate, oratory and diplomacy on top of fostering strong academic understanding.

The program will be based out of the university’s largest campus in Surrey, with some lower-level courses offered at both the Richmond and Langley campuses. Providing applied, hands-on learning away from the classroom and in the world of politics is also a key component of the degree.

“We are tremendously excited to be able to offer the Lower Fraser Region this much-needed BA Major. Political Science is the study of power, and this degree’s unique blend of theoretical training and applied skills will empower the next generation of leaders and makers of change – whether it be through government, international work, law, advocacy, or other career pursuits,” says Dr. Greg Millard, Chair of Political Science.

Like many other BA Major degrees at KPU, the Major in Political Science will provide students opportunities for experiential learning through co-ops, practicums and involvement in extracurricular events: In recent years, students minoring in political science helped organize a joint international conference on “The Responsibilities of Non-State Actors in International Law,” and attended the 2011 Surrey Economic Forum featuring Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

Beginning this fall, students entering the program will be able to participate in brand-new, innovative classes throughout their four-year degree, including “Public Debates in Politics” where students develop public speaking and debating skills – a course unique in the Lower Mainland – as well as a semester-long, for-credit Model United Nations simulation. Other classes focus on the subjects of American Foreign Policy; The Politics of Multiculturalism in Canada; War, Crime, and Violence – Contemporary Political Conflict; Comparative Politics of Asia; and International Peacekeeping.
