Accessibility Services hires Student Assistants for a variety of positions that help provide access to learning materials and environments for students.
Student Assistants work one-on-one with students in academic settings such as classrooms, testing centers, libraries, and labs.

Positions support access in one of the following ways:

  • Library Access
    Provide physical access to library shelves, catalogues, periodical indices and research material including web-based information. This may include reaching and carrying, photocopying and organizing, and scribing library information. A good working knowledge of library catalogues and article indexes is required.

  • Accessible Course Materials
    Scan course material into an electronic format so it can be read by text-to-speech software. This may include scanning, editing, and organizing/labeling electronic documents. A high level of competence with MS Office as well as the ability to independently learn and troubleshoot new software is required.

  • Access in the Lab
    Provide physical access to materials and equipment during a supervised learning experience in a lab or shop. This may include carrying or moving equipment; measuring or pouring materials; and verbalizing processes or events. Assistants in this setting are required to meet and demonstrate safety requirements in the labs or shops, and experience in these environments is preferred.

  • Note Taking
    Take notes to be shared with another student in the same course and section. This may include handwriting or typing notes, editing for quality, and making copies for distribution. Note-takers must demonstrate they can reliably produce legible, accurate, and comprehensive notes.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in post-secondary studies at KPU
  • Successful completion of University Level English
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be dependable, reliable and punctual
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently, solve problems, and utilize university resources
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
