Badminton’s Chung & Chong named 2013-14 KPU Eagles “Athletes of the Year”

Langley, BC - The KPU Eagles department of recreation and athletics concluded its 11th year as a member of the PACWEST and CCAA with the annual varsity banquet tonight at the Cascades Casino, Coast Hotel & Convention Centre.  Tonight the department honours 100 student-athletes and 25 coaches, staff and administrators who make up the seven varsity teams in four sports. 

The Eagles are proud to announce the 2014 recipients of the President’s Outstanding Athlete Awards “Athletes of the Year” Badminton’s Rosalynn Chong, Vancouver, BC and Chris Chung, Hong Kong, China.      

Chris Chung, a fifth year graduating member of the Men’s Badminton team who helped KPU earned the 2014 PACWEST conference team “Silver Medal”, while earning the overall mixed doubles PACWEST “Silver Medal” and being named a 2014 PACWEST All-Star.
Chris also earned the 2014 CCAA national “Bronze Medal” in mixed doubles and twice was named the KPU Eagle Male Athlete of the Week during the winter semester.   

Rosalynn Chong, a fourth year  member of the Women’s Badminton team who helped KPU earned the 2014 PACWEST conference team “Silver Medal”, while earning the overall mixed doubles PACWEST “Silver Medal” and being named a 2014 PACWEST All-Star.
Rosalynn also earned the 2014 CCAA national “Bronze Medal” in mixed doubles and was named the KPU Eagle Female Athlete of the Week, three times, during the winter semester.

The other recipients of the KPU major awards are women’s basketball’s Shilpa Khanna, Surrey, BC and men’s soccer’s Matt Visser, Surrey, BC, who were awarded the Charter Bus Lines varsity athletic academic award.  The Charter Bus Lines award goes to the first year student-athletes with the highest grade point average (GPA) in their first semester at KPU. 

The veteran men’s basketball forward, Gurpal Mann, Surrey, BC receives the Pat Dooley Memorial Award which is presented to a returning member of the team who demonstrates leadership on and off the court.  Women’s soccer team’s co-captain Norma Sheane, Burnaby, BC is the recipient of the 2014 Mary and Pius McEachern memorial award.  This award is given to a member of the team that has demonstrated commitment to the program while maintaining excellence in the classroom.  The Jeff Norris golf award is an award given to a member of the golf team each year.  The recipient in 2013-14 is Thomas Rose, Surrey, BC.  The recipient must have a RCGA handicap index of 6.0 or better and must have competed in a BCGA championship.   

“I would like to thank all the student-athletes, coaches and staff that made the 2013-14 season a success at KPU.  I look forward to a successful fall (2014) with the majority of the student-athletes, returning to compete and study, on our eight teams in September,” commented David A. Kent, director of recreation & athletics.

The KPU Eagles Department of Recreation & Athletics are members of PACWEST (CCAA) with 100 student-athletes participating on eight varsity teams in men’s and women’s basketball, soccer, badminton and golf.
