KPU CASE IT 2012 Team wins the APEX Business-IT Global Challenge!
Message sent on behalf of David Wiens,
Associate Dean, School of Business, KPU:

They did it again!

First they won the CaseIT MIS Case Competition (http://caseit.org/) hosted by SFU in February, 2012, competing against 16 teams from all over the world including Carnegie Mellon, Indiana, Singapore, Queen's, as well as UBC and SFU.

And now the big one: the APEX Business-IT Global Case Challenge in Singapore, Apr 29 – May 3, 2012 (http://apex.smu.edu.sg/), coming out on top in an international field of 19 universities.

Students Natasha Campbell, Larisa Gorodetsky, Steven Vu, and alternate, David Dryden had to analyze a case dealing with business and information systems, and to develop a business recommendation within 24 hours for presentation to a panel of judges comprised of business-IT professionals and industry experts. KPU finished first in the fourth and final round, besting the teams from Indonesia, SFU and HEC from Montreal in that order.

The team, supported primarily by Robert Wood, an Entrepreneurial Leadership instructor, committed considerable time beyond their normal class requirements to train for both the SFU and the APEX competitions. Given the outstanding quality of the competition at both events, their achievement is magnificent and a direct reflection of both their determination to excel and to the high quality of the preparation they have received at KPU. They not only received criticism well during the training period, they requested it and embraced the feedback week-by-week until they were ready … and then won both competitions!

Please join us in congratulating Natasha, Larisa, Steven, and David (who had to participate in all the preparatory work as an alternate) for their outstanding achievement.

KPU School of Business team wins prestigious global competition!

CaseIT_2012
(left to right), KPU instructor, Robert Wood and winning students Larisa Gorodetsky, Anny Chen and
Steven Vu with their award from the 2012 CaseIT Undergraduate Business Case Competition.

Metro Vancouver, BC – (February 9, 2012) – Competing before a panel of industry judges, the KPU School of Business team took first place and a cheque for $1200 in the 2012 CaseIT Undergraduate Business Case Competition. The team composed of KPU's Steven Vu (Surrey, BC), Larisa Gorodetsky (Richmond, BC), and Anny Chen (Richmond, BC) faced stiff competition. Nearly 80 university teams entered the preliminary competition with the top sixteen—including Indiana University, UBC, Queens, Carnegie Mellon and National University of Singapore—invited to Vancouver to compete.

CaseIT is an annual international undergraduate business case competition focused on Management Information Systems (MIS) and designed to find the best and brightest in strategic case analysis. Students from various backgrounds in information technology and business showcase their skills in teamwork, problem solving, and critical thinking to a panel of industry professionals. This year's competition dealt with security, its role in business success, and the obligations to protect a company's stakeholders, bottom line and future. The panel of judges included representatives from companies such as Coast Capital Savings, CGI, Orbis Financial Planning, SAP, and CIOVAN.

Team member Steven Vu said, "Identifying information is hidden, so the judges don't know where you're from—they simply choose the team that's best." Once you level the playing field like that, it's about skill and what you know." School of Business faculty and team coach Robert Wood echoed that sentiment, saying, "The team truly turned in a first-class performance."

According to School of Business Dean Dr. Arthur Coren, "Case competitions enrich the undergraduate experience. They blend theory with practice and give students an opportunity to apply their learning. It's one of the many ways we develop students who are ready to work and ready to lead."

"The competition makes it all very real," said team member Larisa Gorodetsky said, "Working under pressure really makes you think and perform."

This year's CaseIT competition was the largest yet, with 80 teams representing universities from all over the world, including Canada, the United States, Germany, Australia, Lebanon, Indonesia and others. In the words of B.C. Premier Christy Clark, the competition "is a great way for the brightest minds to apply their skills, expand their horizons and network, as they prepare for their future roles in our society."

The next stop for the award-winning team? In April they'll be packing their suitcases to participate in the APEX Business-IT Global Case Challenge in Singapore where they'll compete to repeat their success.

KPU has been serving the Metro Vancouver region for more than 30 years, and has opened doors to success for more than 250,000 people. Four campuses—Richmond, Surrey, Cloverdale and Langley—offer a comprehensive range of sought-after programs, including business, liberal arts and science, design, health, trades and technology, apprenticeships, horticulture, and academic and career advancement. Over 17,500 students annually have a choice from over 200 programs, including bachelor's degrees, associate degrees, diplomas, certificates and citations.

KPU prevails among top universities in national business competition

KPU business students Steven Vu and Joe Zhao prevailed in the preliminary round of the Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (ICBC), emerging from over 170 submissions from 41 universities across Canada and around the world. The KPU team was named as a finalist in the Caro Systems Management of Information Systems Event.

Inter-Collegiate Business Competition
Led by their coach Kamal Masri (centre), KPU business students Steven Vu (right) and Joe Zhao (left) prevailed in the preliminary round of the Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (ICBC) in the Caro Systems Management of Information Systems Event

Reflecting on his experience in the competition so far, Zhao, a third-year business student from Richmond says, "It is very helpful for students to gain real-world experience in business. By understanding the issues, conducting critical analysis, brainstorming options and recommending solutions, I have realized the importance of effective problem-solving and communication skills."

For Surrey resident Vu, the competition provided unique learning opportunities, "These case studies are a great way to learn about business because you must place yourself within the situation described and think critically. The learning environment created from this kind of setting is a fantastic experience."

In final round, the KPU team will have a chance to put their business knowledge and analytical skills to work and compete against five teams from other Canadian universities. The teams will prepare a case presentation under severe time constraints to a panel of judges comprised of professors and industry professionals who will evaluate the presentations based upon the clarity and understanding of all the issues at stake.

Kamal Masri, KPU business faculty and coach for the team, believes that the ICBC adds to his students' learning experience, "High calibre case competitions provide students with unique opportunities to develop their public speaking skills and critical analysis of business scenarios." He adds, "They are excellent opportunities to showcase KPU's School of Business talent and dedication to student development. Following the competition, students walk away with a deeper understanding and appreciation of business problems and the related pressure to solve them."

The ICBC is Canada's premier undergraduate business case competition, in which participating teams will complete a detailed analysis of a business case while considering relevant background information, the business environment and issues at stake. For more information about the ICBC, visit: icbconline.ca

As the second largest business school in Western Canada, KPU's School of Business is internationally accredited and offers bachelor's degrees in entrepreneurial leadership, accounting, information technology and human resources management.
