English Language Teaching

ELTE 0391 CR-3

Preparation for English Language Teaching and the TKT

Students at an advanced level of English will learn the principles required for successful English language teaching to adult speakers of English as an additional language. They will study the language of teaching, classroom management, lesson planning, teaching sequences and the selection and design of teaching materials. Students will also prepare for the Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) (University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations).

Prerequisites: ELST 0281 with B- or [(Accuplacer 108 or TOEFL iBT 79 or cb-TOEFL 213 or TOEFL 550) and (Kwantlen ESL Writing Band 6 or TOEFL iBT writing sub-score 21 or TWE 4.5)]or IELTS 6.0 with no sub-score less than 5.5 AND ELST 0283 with B- or (Accuplacer 98 and KIST 40) or TOEFL iBT 79 with TOEFL iBT listening sub-score 19 and TOEFL iBT speaking sub-score 19 or [(TSE 40 or SPEAK 40) and (TOEFL Listening Scaled Score 55 or cb-TOEFL Listening Scaled Score 21)] or IELTS 6.0 with no sub-score less than 5.5 or permission of the instructor

Applied Linguistics and English Language Teaching

Students will acquire an understanding of the lexical, syntactic and phonological systems of the English language and apply this to the context of the English language classroom. They will analyze meaning, form and pronunciation and determine how to clearly convey these aspects of language to second language learners. Students will also examine the receptive language skills (reading and listening) with reference to learning and teaching.

Prerequisites: LING 1200 and [LING 1200 or (ENGL 1100 and one 2000 level course)]

Approaches to English Language Teaching

Students will develop a broad understanding of research and theory in the field of English language teaching. They will examine research in first and second language acquisition, the psychology of learning, and adult learner education as they relate to the classroom. Students will also examine the role of society, culture and education to help develop a guiding set of principles required to be successful English language instructors.

Prerequisites: LING 1100 and [LING 1200 or (ENGL 1100 and 2000 level course)]

Methodology for English Language Teaching

Students will learn the methodology and skills required for successful English language teaching to adult speakers of English as an additional language. They will study classroom management, lesson planning, teaching sequences, and the selection and design of teaching materials.

Prerequisites: ELTE 3100 and 3200

Corequisites: ELTE 4400 

ELTE 4991 cr-6

Language Education for Overseas English Teachers

Students will develop professional language and communication skills for their work as practicing English language teachers in their native country. They will also extend their knowledge and skills in the principles and practices of teaching and learning English, resources and materials, planning and management of teaching and learning, monitoring and evaluation, and professional development.

Prerequisites: TOEFL 550 with TWE 4.5 and TSE 45 or cb-TOEFL  213 with TWE 4.5 and TSE 45 or IBT TOEFL 79 with a score of  23 on the speaking component or IELTS 6 with at least 5.5 on  all components of the test or Cambridge First Certificate in English with an A
