Kwantlen administers a number of scholarships, bursaries and loans for which students may apply. A wide range of programs are available for students who require assistance in meeting basic educational costs.

Student Awards and Financial Assistance staff are available to give advice on financial options for funding educational costs and to provide information on government funded programs.

Scholarships, Awards and Bursaries

Kwantlen offers a variety of scholarships, awards and bursaries to its students. A variety of criteria apply to these awards including assessed financial need, academic achievement, program of study and other specific requirements. • Important Deadline: September 30 is the deadline to apply for most awards listed in Kwantlen’s Awards, Bursaries and Scholarships Guide. The Guide and any other award application deadlines are available online at www.kwantlen.ca/awards

Bursary assistance may be available for those students who can demonstrate an unexpected financial emergency and unmet financial need. Bursaries are non-repayable awards which are allocated primarily on the basis of assessed financial need. Emergency loans are available for students who are experiencing an unexpected delay with their student loans. Additional information, including eligibility and how to apply, can be obtained from the Student Awards and Financial Assistance office located on any campus.

Direct and External Awards

To ensure Kwantlen students have access to as many resources as possible to help fund their studies, Student Awards and Financial Assistance maintains a list of direct and external awards which are offered by donors who may not necessarily be directly affiliated with Kwantlen, but who offer awards which Kwantlen students may be eligible for. Government Student Loans and Grants

Student loans are a form of government-funded repayable financial assistance. This funding is intended to help students finance their post-secondary education. Eligibility is determined by a standard means test developed by the federal and provincial governments. While you pursue post-secondary studies on a full-time basis, the government subsidizes the interest on your loan.

To obtain a loan, apply directly to the government assistance provider in your home province. This is a one-stop process that considers you for federal and provincial loans and grants. If you apply for a loan, you are responsible for understanding how your province's program works, so read their information carefully.

To receive a loan or to establish interest-free status for a previous loan, students must be attending on a full-time basis. This is very important, as dropping below this threshold can mean early repayment and loss of funding. For the purposes of most university-level programs offered at Kwantlen, a student is considered to be attending on a full-time basis provided that they are registered in a minimum of 9 credits per semester (in courses numbered 1100 or higher). Generally, students attending in trades, career or vocational programs are deemed to be attending on a full-time basis. Some exceptions apply and it is the student’s responsibility to confirm the eligibility of their program of studies.

Residents of BC can apply for their student loan online. For more information and to apply, go to www.studentaidbc.ca . Paper applications are also available from the Student Awards and Financial Assistance office on any campus.

Registration Deposit and Fee Payment Deadline Overide

Students who have been approved for government student loan assistance from StudentAid BC or another province, the Canada Study Grant High-Need Part-Time program (CSG HNPT), the Adult Basic Education Student Assistance Program (ABESAP) and those who are in receipt of a direct award may be eligible for an exemption from the Fee Payment deadline. Please complete the Registration Deposit and Tuition Fees Override Form, available from the Student Awards and Financial Assistance office or online at www.kwantlen.ca/awards , at least one week prior to the Fee Payment deadline. Faxed copies are acceptable.

Fee Deferments for Trades and Selective-Entry Program Students

Students who are qualified for admission to a program which requires the payment of a commitment fee to secure their seat may be eligible for a deferral of the commitment fee if they have applied for government student loan assistance. Please contact the Student Awards and Financial Assistance Office on any campus for more information.

Adult Basic Education Student Assistance Program (ABESAP)

This program is available to assist students who are upgrading their education in preparation for post-secondary level studies. Eligibility is determined on the basis of assessed financial need.

Eligible students will be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants studying either full or part-time in one of the following areas:

• Qualifying Studies
• English Language Studies (ELST)
• Career Choices and Life Success (formerly Employment and Educational Access - EEA)
• Adult Basic Education
• Access Programs for People with Disabilities (APPD)

Eligibility is determined on the basis of assessed financial need.

High Need Part-Time Canada Study Grant Program (HNPT CSG)

The HNPT CSG Program is available to assist students studying on a part-time basis in an eligible post-secondary level program. Eligibility is determined on the basis of assessed financial-need and a demonstrated need to study on a part-time basis only. The CSG has a yearly limit of $1200.00 per student. Once the limit has been reached, students have the option of the Part-Time Canada Student Loan Program.
