Bookstore

The Kwantlen Bookstores provide students with texts, course related materials, merchandise and much more at all our campus locations.

We exist to serve our customers; we anticipate your needs and exceed you expectations. To do this we maintain a team of outstanding people working together to serve you throughout the entire year. Our staff is friendly, knowledgeable and very approachable. Drop into any of our locations to experience the Kwantlen Bookstore difference. We can help you consider, compare and choose.

The Bookstore maintains a complete booklist of the required and optional texts, and estimated prices, up to eight weeks before the start of classes. Career and Educational Resource Centres

The Career and Educational Resource Centre on each campus provides registered and prospective students with a wide range of information:

  • Occupational and educational information, including labour market forecasts;
  • Study skills information, including brief handouts and videotapes;
  • Information on personal and self-help topics, including pamphlets and books;
  • Referral information on community services and agencies; and
  • Computers with internet access for career or education related research.

Counselling

Kwantlen’s professional counsellors assist registered students in three major areas: career, personal and academic. With a few, vary rare exceptions, all information discussed with a Kwantlen counsellor is considered private and is held in strict confidence.

Career Counselling

Counsellors help students to clarify their career and/or educational goals, either through seminars or individual appointment. In addition, counsellors assist students in addressing career management and employability issues.

Personal Counselling

Counsellors help students with a wide range of personal issues that affect their academic performance and/or general wellbeing. Examples of common concerns:

  • Adjustment to post-secondary studies
  • Anxiety, depression and stress
  • Relationship and family problems
  • Perfectionism and procrastination
  • Eating disorders
  • Drug and alcohol use
  • Assault or abuse
  • Sexual identity
  • Grief
  • Trauma

In addition, counsellors assist students in crisis and make referrals for specialized help.

Academic Counselling

Counsellors help students to develop the skills necessary for academic success through Study Skills seminars, provided in partnership with Kwantlen’s Learning Centres, and through individual appointments. Examples of study skills topics include time management, note-taking, memory tips and preparing for tests and exams. In addition, counsellors assist students in the appeal and complaint processes.

First Nation Students

The office of the Coordinator, First Nations Education provides direct services to Aboriginal Students by:

  • Providing general information on Kwantlen’s programs
  • Facilitating transition into Kwantlen to prospective students
  • Advocating for students
  • Liaising with internal departments, external agencies, institutes, and bands

The three Kwantlen Learning Centres are facilities where any Kwantlen student can find learning assistance, one-to-one and small group tutoring, and help with study skills and learning strategies.

Access is also available to print and electronic resources to help students complete their assignments. Available services and resources include:

Kwantlen’s four campus libraries at Cloverdale, Langley, Surrey and Richmond provide accessible, relevant and timely resources and services to meet the needs of a diverse community of learners. Library resources are available to students, all Kwantlen employees and community borrowers.

The library provides print and electronic collections as well as programs and services that help students succeed in their course studies. The library conducts instructional programs that help students learn more about research skills and information literacy.

Smart Card

The Kwantlen Smart Card is a library card and also a student identification card. When new students are registered for the current term, they can ask for a Kwantlen Smart Card at any campus library.

The Smart Card must be presented when signing out any library materials and must be presented at all Student Association sponsored activities. In addition, it may be used as photo identification when picking up grade statements, transcripts, or other documents from Enrolment and Registrar Services. The Smart Card is permanent and is automatically updated each semester upon registration. If the card is lost, please notify the library immediately.

Finding Your Way Around

Library instruction focuses on Library and Web Instruction Sessions for all new students. Reference librarians are available at all campus library Information Desks to assist students individually and to teach the skills needed to use libraries effectively. The library’s website provides timely information on library programs and services. In addition, it provides access to instructional materials, the library catalogue and research databases. Multipurpose learning labs are available at all of our campus libraries. The PCs in the labs may be used for library instruction; searching the library catalogue, subscription databases, and website; searching the Internet; and e-mail or word processing.

Books, Magazines/Journals and Videos/DVDs

Our collection includes more than 170,000-catalogued items of both print and non-print materials, and approximately 900 print periodical titles. The entire collection is listed in the library catalogue, which can be searched on library PCs at each campus or from off campus through our library website.

In addition, the library subscribes to over 70 online article databases which provide access to full text content from over 20,000 journals. These article databases can be searched through the library PCs or from off campus through our library website.

The library has an excellent video/DVD collection. Kwantlen is a member of the Media Exchange Cooperative (MEC—a media cooperative of post-secondary institutions in BC), and a link to the online MEC Catalogue is available via the library website. Students can reserve videos/DVDs online through the library catalogue. Booking of equipment can be arranged by contacting the Audiovisual Services Technician at your nearest campus library.

The library houses a number of collections that supplement the book, periodical and media collections. The government document and map collections provide unique and often difficult to obtain information.

The library also houses the Kwantlen Archives, which contains printed materials pertaining to the history and development of Kwantlen.

Loan Periods

Most print materials are loaned for a three-week period with the exception of reference books, which must remain in the library. Periodicals may be borrowed for three days. Materials may be renewed if not requested by another borrower. Some materials are also placed on short-term reserve for students’ convenience.

Requests and Recalls

The library operates a request and recall system that gives users access to materials on all campuses.

Charges

Fines will be charged for overdue videos/DVDs, for overdue reserve material and for overdue materials that have been recalled. Overdue fines or failure to pay for lost materials may result in the withholding of student transcripts and credentials, the suspension of library privileges, and may also prevent registration for courses.

Materials from Other Institutions

A Smart Card can be used to obtain a community borrower’s card at Simon Fraser University and some BC Community Colleges. An interlibrary loan network allows access to the collections of many post-secondary libraries Canada-wide.

School / Community Liaison Office

The School/Community Liaison Office services prospective students. Each year, representatives from the School/ Community Liaison Office visit secondary schools and attend education fairs in Kwantlen’s catchment regions: Delta, Langley, Richmond and Surrey, as well as many out-of-region areas. Representatives provide up-to-date information to students, parents, counsellors and teachers about Kwantlen and its programs, services, facilities and admission requirements.

The office arranges the mail-out of information such as viewbooks, applications, financial awards information and brochures to all BC public and independent secondary schools. Arrangements for campus tours can be made through the Liaison Office. Services are also available to connect individuals to visit or tour a specific discipline area. The Liaison Office also hosts events and offers information throughout the academic year. For more information, please contact 604.599.3165.

Services for Students with Disabilities

Students with disabilities who require classroom accommodations or other support services are requested to contact a Disability Advisor to discuss information on accessing programs and courses. Support may include, interpreting, note taking, alternate format text, exam support, adaptive equipment, Learning Specialists for students with LD, and LD screening and strategies.

Students with mental health disorders are encouraged to seek assistance such as: room to take medications, beverages in class, contact person when managing difficult symptoms of illness, part-time status, program extensions, leaves from courses during episodic illness and other support.
