General Business Studies Diploma

DESCRIPTION

The two-year General Business Studies Diploma is a flexible diploma option, that allows students to select a variety of business courses once they have fulfilled the core requirements of the program. Students can develop their own individualized business diploma, that meets their needs in various specialized areas of study. Students may also use this diploma to complete the foundation courses required for direct entry into Kwantlen's Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Business Administration in Human Resources Management in Entrepreneurial Leadership. Some classes are offered during evenings to accommodate students who wish to complete the program on a part-time basis.

The General Business Studies Diploma may also be used to complete the foundation courses required for direct entry into the following Kwantlen Business Degrees:

  • Bachelor of Business Administration in Entrepreneurial Leadership
  • Bachelor of Business Administration in Human Resources Management

Most of the courses included in this program are also transferable to other universities and colleges (please refer to the BC Transfer Guide at www.bctransferguide.ca regarding the transfer status of courses to specific institutions).

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

General admission requirements apply.

Students wishing to complete the program without having to undertake any preparatory courses must enter with English 12 with a B grade or better, or equivalent.

CONTENT
Core Requirements:

Students must take a total of 10 foundation courses in the following subject areas:

  • Accounting (ACCT 1110 or 2293)*
  • Applied Communications (CMNS 1140)
  • Business (BUSI 1110 or 1215)*
  • Two Computer Business Systems courses (CBSY 1105 and one other)
  • Economics (ECON 1101 or 1150)*
  • English (ENGL 1100)
  • Marketing (MRKT 1199)
  • Mathematics (or ACCT 1130)**
  • Statistics (or ACCT 1230)**

*Note: ACCT 2293, BUSI 1215, and ECON 1150 are recommended for students intending to proceed into any Kwantlen BBA degree program after completing the diploma.

**Note: ACCT 1130 is the business math course for career programs; however, any equivalent or higher math course may be used to meet this requirement. ACCT 1230 is the business statistics course for career programs; however, any college statistics course may be used to meet this requirement.

Business Studies Requirements

In addition to core requirements, General Business Studies students are required to take six courses at the 2000 level or higher from at least two of the following areas:

  • Accounting (3000 level courses)
  • Business
  • Computer Business Systems
  • Economics
  • Marketing
Elective

The remaining four courses are electives. Students must select two courses from either the list of approved Business Liberal Education Electives (for a complete listing, please refer to www.kwantlen.cacourses/lbedcrs/libeduelec.html) or from the list of Economics and/or Applied Communications courses numbered 1100 or higher.

For the remaining two electives, students may select any university courses numbered 1100 or higher that carry academic credit.

Note, For Graduation Purposes only:
  • credit will NOT be granted for ACCT 1110 or ACCT 1210 if credit has been previously granted for ACCT 2293
  • credit will NOT be granted for ACCT 2293 if credit has previously been granted for ACCT 1110 or ACCT 1210
TRANSFER

Graduates (with a CGPA of 2.7 with a C+ or higher in Accounting and Statistics) are eligible for direct entry into the third year of Kwantlen's Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Entrepreneurial Leadership or Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Human Resources Management. They may also receive block transfer credit towards business degree programs at Royal Roads University and Thompson Rivers University – Open Learning. Courses may also transfer individually to UBC, SFU, UCFV, UVic and other institutions (please refer to the BC Transfer Guide at www.bctransferguide.ca for specific transfer credit information).

GRADUATION

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be awarded a Diploma in General Business Studies.
