Access Programs for People with Disabilities


(Formerly Adult Special Education)

Offered at Langley, Newton and Richmond

Description

The goal of the Access Programs for People with Disabilities Access Programs for People with Disabilities department at Kwantlen is to provide post-secondary education for adults with disabilities. This program will help participants prepare for employment and independent living.

Career Opportunities

This program is designed to maximize social skills and employment opportunities for students with disabilities. With appropriate instruction and training, people who have special learning needs can realize their career and personal potential.

Admission Requirements

Students may enter the program at various entry times (space permitting) and may progress at their own pace through various options:

Students pay a one-time application fee to Kwantlen, plus a moderate tuition fee. In some cases, various government ministries may pay a portion of these costs.

Career Awareness Option

This option is designed to provide information to students about work opportunities available for adults with disabilities. The program combines job-oriented classroom instruction with some work experience. For students with more challenging needs, the program will focus initially on pre-employment and community access skills.

Job Preparation Option

This option is designed to address the vocational goals of adults with disabilities who are seeking competitive employment. This option combines classroom instruction with monitored work experience.

Vocational Skills Training Option

Skills training, combined with appropriate work experience, is offered at Newton campus (automotive, light warehousing, childcare aide, food services, janitorial) and Richmond campus (clerical, childcare aide, food services, janitorial). Students receive assistance in finding employment and post-employment support as needed.

Graduation

Upon successful completion of a program option, students are awarded a Certificate of Completion.

Other Information

A job placement service, funded in partnership with Kwantlen, Human Resource Development Canada (HRDC) is provided to students with special needs who do not need training to become employed, but who do need assistance in looking for work and support after employment.
