Drafting

Intake for Electrical Full-time: Continuous at Richmond (effective immediately admission to this option at Richmond will no longer be offered)

Intake for Industrial Full-time: Jan., April, July, and Oct. at Newton

Offered evenings at Newton, continuous intake.

Intake for Mechanical Full-time: Jan., April, July, and Oct. at Langley

Description

Full-time day Certificate program

The program prepares students for a career as a drafting technician. Classes operate under simulated design office conditions to prepare students for actual drafting positions in architectural or consulting engineering firms.

Career Opportunities

Drafting technology graduates may pursue drafting careers in a range of disciplines: Architectural, Electrical, Structural, Mechanical, Civil, Piping, Heating and Ventilation, and often in related areas of Steel Fabrication and Construction.

Graduates generally start employment at an entry-level position, gaining on-the-job experience while working toward a senior drafting position over a period of approximately three to four years. Beyond this it is possible to progress to a position of section leader, design draftsperson, or a project draftsperson coordinator responsible for the allocation of work to other members of the drafting team.

Not all drafting personnel will choose to spend their entire career involved in the actual development and production of working drawings. Many, after gaining experience, choose to enter related employment where a sound knowledge of the interpretation of technical drawings is required. Such related positions could be in estimating, technical product sales, inspection or supervision of construction, technical illustration, or as a member of the administrative staff of a construction or engineering company.

Admission Requirements

In addition to general Kwantlen University College requirements, the following admission prerequisites also apply:

* These requirements must have been completed within the last 5 years.

If one or both of the requirements have not been completed, the student should arrange to take the appropriate placement testing to assess his/her math and English skills. Upgrading can then be arranged, if necessary.

Note: Only applicants who have met the requirements will be placed on the Drafting program waiting list.

Additional Information

Applicants should have the ability to work well with co-workers as a member of a drafting/design team, which includes the ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral English. Good eyesight, manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination are requirements of board drafting. In the case of computer aided drafting (CAD), special circumstances can often be accommodated.

Full-time Certificate Programs - Langley

The program is competency-based continuous intake and takes advantage of modularized course material to allow a system of individually instructor-directed learning. Each course is broken down into modules representing a small, specialized area of drafting that can be studied, practised, and mastered, allowing extra time in difficult areas and using less time in others. The program offers drafting courses leading to a program certificate in one or more specialty areas.

The program is approximately 12 months in length with classes/labs six hours per day Monday through Friday. This program allows students to start in January, April, July, and October. An important advantage of this system is that graduates leave for employment at the rate of only 2 or 3 each month. In other words, we are not sending out large groups of 20 or 30 students each month to compete for employment.

Full-time Certificate Program - Newton

This program has modified continuous intake with four 12-week sessions commencing the first week of January (winter), April (spring), July (summer), and October (fall). There will be an intake of new students at the beginning of each session, so students on the waiting list can begin the program in the next session that has an available seat. The program will take 12 months (4 sessions) to complete.

This system will graduate 10 students every 3 months so graduates will have minimal competition when seeking employment. At the same time, the four common start dates will facilitate teamwork, provide experience in meeting deadlines, and allow for class activities such as field trips.

Offered at Newton

Draftspersons currently experienced in manual drafting and wishing to upgrade to CAD may be permitted to enter the program on a temporary basis to acquire CAD skills. At the same time, the student must complete one of the specialty modules (ex: Structural, Piping, HVAC etc.) This option to upgrade to CAD in a daytime program is available only if space permits.

Drafting Technology Diploma

Offered at Newton

Description

This two-year diploma program is currently being developed to meet industry demand for drafters with design skills. In addition to comprehensive drafting and AutoCAD training, students will study physics and math and will apply these principles to design and drafting projects. The program will also provide training in communications, including technical writing and communicating on the Internet. Projects will be integrated with the use of other office software including word processor, spreadsheet, and database.

Admission Requirements

In addition to general University College requirements, the following admission prerequisites apply:

Grade 12 graduation with:

  • Math 12 and Physics 11 with a grade of C+ or higher
  • English 12 with a grade of C or better

More Information

Graduates of a one-year drafting program from Kwantlen or another educational institute can upgrade their design skills by taking the design courses. Credit will be given for previous drafting training and experience.
