Graduate Nurse Refresher

Offered at Surrey

Description

This individualized, self-paced Graduate Nurse Refresher program is designed to meet the needs of registered nurses who have been out of nursing for a minimum of five years and who wish to refresh their knowledge and skills in preparation for returning to practice.

Career Opportunities

This program prepares the graduate to practice nursing by meeting the refresher course requirement for registration with the RNABC. Once registered, nurses are prepared to work in medical-surgical units, and long-term care facilities throughout BC. The graduate will have the potential, with additional education, experience and supervision, to work in specialized and critical care areas as a member of a health care team.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Current registration with RNABC, or eligible for nurse registration in BC. with or without a refresher course;
  • English language assessment if initial nursing education program was not in Canada (written TOEFL 550 or Computer TOEFL 213, SLEP 61, TSE 50);
  • Nursing experience to include: registered or graduate nurse experience in a medical, surgical or related setting; experience as a nurse or care aide in a Canadian health care setting; five years or longer of no nursing practice prior to application;
  • CPR certificate - Level C certificate. CPR certification must remain current throughout the program.
  • Immunizations consistent with the requirements of clinical agencies.
  • A criminal record search completed three months prior to enrolling in the program.
  • A criminal record check is required by the Registered Nurses Association of British Columbia prior to registration as a nurse and is a pre-practice requirement of some of the clinical agencies used during the program. Any costs related to having this check done are the responsibility of the individual student. The Registered Nurses Association may refuse to register any person who has been convicted of an indictable offence. Applicants with any criminal convictions should request advice from the Dean of Community and Health Studies at Kwantlen, or from the Registrar of the Registered Nurses Association before making formal application for admission to the program.
  • Clinical Agency Requirements: Some agencies may require students to take an Oath of Confidentiality. If any practice experience agencies require proof of current immunizations, all costs and responsibilities associated with these are the responsibility of the individual students. Failure to have documentation acceptable to the agency at the time of placement may mean denial of the experience, which in turn will prevent completion of the program of studies.
  • An interview with the Program Coordinator or designate may be required.

Content

The program admits students in the fall and spring semesters. When studying full time, the student can complete the Theory course in five to six months and the Preceptorship course in a minimum of 160 hours. Student participation is required in eight to nine workshops throughout the program for orientation, assertiveness and psychomotor skill upgrading. Students may take up to one year to complete the program.

RNABC entry level competencies, along with the Allen Model of Nursing, provides the framework for the study materials. The topics of study have been divided into three categories.

1. Specific (Theory A)

Theory A consists of 13 modules, which is based on the Allen Nursing model. The modules include: nursing theory and conceptual model; health promotion; nursing process; degenerative process; cell aberration; infectious process; perioperative nursing; congenital and metabolic disorders; immunology; separation; mental health.

2. General (Theory B)

Theory B modules include: introduction to health assessment; physiology; pharmacology; interpersonal aspects; growth and development; professional responsibilities; mathematical skills.

3. Specialty Topics

These are designed to facilitate adaptation of the student to a new or changing work environment. The modules include: mental health disorders; oncology; gerontology, home care, pediatrics, obstetrics, community health, health professionals as entrepreneurs and trauma. Each student is required to study at least one of the specialty modules.

The student determines the sequence in which the modules will be completed and multiple choice examinations written at the University College.
