Tutor Development Process and Materials

The Tutor Training and Education programs within the Learning Centres at KPU have been developed based on the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) and National Tutoring Association (NTA) levels. They are currently accredited through the Canadian Educational Developers Caucus (EDC) of the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE). The Learning Specialists Association of Canada is currently working on a Canadian Tutoring Standard which we are a part of. All new tutors complete Level 1 training, and returning tutors continue their training to achieve Level 2 and Level 3 certification.

Becoming a Peer Tutor

Foundational concepts and situations are presented during each level of training for tutors. Then the process is supported and supplemented with ongoing  exercises, discussions, and reflection.

Tutor Trainees will receive a minimum of 15 hours of training, coaching, and mentoring at each level coupled with their active peer tutoring of at least 25 hours in each semester.

Tutors will complete Training Integration exercises in Moodle.

Training for Current Peer Tutors

Current TLC tutors can register here for upcoming tutor training sessions. Please confirm with your Learning Centre Coordinator the level of tutor training for which you are eligible to register.

Tutor Portfolios

Peer Tutors create a personal portfolio of their tutoring achievements and major strengths. This draws on the individual's experiential processes, reflective thinking, analytical thinking, and metacognition.

These Tutor portfolios are stories about opportunity for self-reflection and demonstration of personal and academic growth through documentation.

Tutor Program Development Workshop!

We have had the privilege of introducing many educators from across Canada to our tutor training program. If you would like to take the training yourself, or would like to send a member of your team to our training, we offer the Tutor Program Development Workshop (TPDW) program episodically. If you are a faculty member in a post-secondary institution who is interested in becoming a Trainer, more information about this workshop will be available early in 2023.
