Eagles strike success at BCCAA provincial badminton championships

(METRO VANCOUVER, B.C.) The Kwantlen Polytechnic University Eagles badminton team faced off against B.C.’s best in the British Columbia Colleges Athletics Association (BCCAA) provincial tournament hosted by Vancouver Island University (VIU) in Nanaimo. The tournament marked the fourth and final tournament of the 2009-2010 season and saw the best athletes competing in both individual and team events. Kwantlen was able to capture three medals in their overall second place tournament result.

Medal performances for Kwantlen came from the doubles teams. The men’s doubles of Simon Wu (Taiwan) and Willis Kwee (Richmond) came home with a bronze medal, while the women’s doubles team including Ashley Jang (Richmond) and Michelle Simard (New Westminster), and the mixed team of Jensen Ly (Calgary) and Leah Rihela (Surrey) both earned themselves a silver medal.

“Everyone played very well,” comments coach Dave Cruthers. “Jensen Ly and Leah Rihela’s outstanding performance really set the tone for the whole day. Our team fed off of it.”

The results of the provincials were not enough to guarantee Kwantlen a place at the national championships, but the Eagles are in a great position to continue on. They will be up for the wildcard position, which B.C. teams have a strong chance of securing based on the high quality of play that comes from the province. “We just have to wait and see,” says coach Cruthers.

Kwantlen’s varsity athletics teams are the Kwantlen Eagles. In basketball, soccer, badminton and golf, they compete in national intercollegiate leagues. For more information about the Kwantlen Eagles or view live webcast, visit kpu.ca/athletics or follow the Eagles on Twitter: KwantlenEagles
