World Renowned Designers Attend Kwantlen Fashion Event

VANCOUVER, B.C. - (March 21, 2011) - April 15 through 17, 2011 Kwantlen Polytechnic University will host fashion designers Shingo Sato, from Milan, and Timo Rissanen, from Parson’s New School of Design in NY, in a unique fashion design event that brings today’s most exciting fashion design concepts to Canada. Planned for the weekend is a public Lecture/Reception on Friday evening in the Ballroom of the Hycroft Mansion and two Master Classes open to all at Kwantlen’s Richmond campus.

For the past few years the cult fashion world has been captivated by a series of YouTube videos showing the sculpted magic of Shingo Sato and his TR (Transformational Reconstruction) techniques in fashion design. Working in Milan for ‘alta moda’ designers, Shingo Sato has taken his technical experience with Azzadine Alaia to new design frontiers as he combines the complexity of origami, couture draping, flat pattern design and flawless construction. His work has appeared on the runways of major designers and he also has his own design line in Milan. On this 2011 Tour, Mr. Sato will also be appearing at the Illinois Institute of Art in Chicago and California College of the Arts in San Francisco.

Timo Rissanen has recently created headlines with his extremely innovative Zero Waste fashion design concepts that are changing the sustainable clothing industry. He has developed new pattern design techniques for eliminating waste from the cutting room floor and the environment, designing ingenious pattern maps so that all the fabric of a given width is employed in the design of the garment. His unusual cuts yield unusual designs and his work is often featured in sustainable design shows.

Both designers will be signing copies of the their new books, Transformational Reconstruction by Shingo Sato, and Shaping Sustainable Fashion, edited by Alison Gwilt and Timo Rissanen.

Information for all events and ticket purchase for the Lecture/Reception and the Master Classes may be found at the Kwantlen Fashion Design & Technology website www.kwantlen.ca/design/fashion/events or Center for Pattern Design website, www.centerforpatterndesign.com.
