Kwantlen’s President’s Ambassadorial Team kicks off third annual coat drive

Mon, Nov 19, 2012

Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) students launched their third annual coat drive in support of the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Coast B.C. on November 19, 2012.

The President’s Ambassadorial Team (PAT) - compromised of 12 exceptional students - started the drive two years ago, and last year were able to contribute over 50 garbage bags of warm jackets to both the Langley Boys and Girls Club and the Front Room in Surrey. The drive was accompanied by five bake sales; raising over $2,000 that went towards purchasing gloves, hats, socks and blankets.

“Last year when we dropped off the coats to the Boys and Girls Club, it really hit home that there are so many people struggling to have the basics,” said Michele Gruenhage, PAT student and coat drive co-organizer. “This one little girl came in with a volunteer and started trying on coats right away. When she found one she liked and that fit, she was so happy. In that moment I knew we were doing something right, and something good. I was glad we made the effort.”

Beginning November 19, 2012, eco-friendly frog-boxes will be available for clothing donations at Kwantlen campus libraries in Surrey, Cloverdale, Langley and Richmond. Warm and gently used clothing will be accepted until mid-December. For information on how you can donate in other capacities, contact Hayley Woodin at hayley.woodin@kwantlen.net.

Kwantlen’s President’s Ambassadorial Team is made up of 15-20 students who not only excel academically, but who believe strongly in community involvement. The team works out of the Office of the President to promote education at internal and external events, and to volunteer with local organizations for the betterment of the community.

Kwantlen Polytechnic University has been serving the Metro Vancouver region for 30 years, and has opened doors to success for more than 250,000 people.
