Metro Vancouver, B.C. —  Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s (KPU) Dr. Balbir Gurm was recognized with a 2013 Times of Canada Community Excellence Award in Academics on Friday.

The awards ceremony – which celebrates excellence in the South Asian community – recognized 21 Lower Mainland leaders in the following categories: Business, Leadership, Sports, Academics, Art and Culture, Public Institutions, Women in Business, Youth Entrepreneur, and Child Prodigy.

“I feel honoured and privileged to receive this award.  It is truly a privilege because my contributions to the community are all related to equity and assisting those less fortunate,” says Gurm, nursing instructor and editor-in-chief of the Transformative Dialogues: Teaching and Learning Journal at KPU. “Being privileged with a doctorate in education has enabled me to combine academic knowledge with practical knowledge from our community partners and together, we can advocate for social justice issues. I am grateful to the Times of Canada and the community for this recognition, and I hope that I can be an inspiration for others.”

Gurm has previously been honoured with the Teaching Excellence Award from the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia, and the NISOD Teaching Excellence Award from the University of Texas.

The Times of Canada covers news and entertainment, and is based in Surrey.
