KPU PR students break fundraising record

Mon, Mar 24, 2014

Richmond, B.C. - Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) public relations students raised and donated $14,000 to support marginalized young adults pursuing post-secondary education, the largest amount a PR grad event has ever raised for charity.

Eighteen students set to graduate this spring planned, organized and hosted the Growth Gala at the Museum of Vancouver's Joyce Walley Learning Centre as part of their final year project. Proceeds from the event - which included presentations, speakers, a silent auction and an evening of networking - went to STAND Foundation, which supports young adults in the Greater Vancouver area who face significant personal or familial challenges.

Jason Zhang, a past STAND grant recipient now studying computer sciences, spoke at the gala about how his journey to post-secondary would not have been possible without the support of the foundation and, by consequent, those who support it.

"It's events like this one that not only financially contribute to foundations and charities, but they also help bring people together. When people are united at fundraising events, yes, the funds are helpful, but it's more than that: It helps people realize the goals of STAND Foundation and what they're striving for," says Zhang.

Second-year students in KPU’s public relations diploma program organize an event each year to raise funds for a local not-for-profit charity of their choice. In previous years, students have raised as much as $10,000 for the BC Cancer Agency, Cinderella Project, Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver, Autism Support Dogs and BC Space.
