PACWEST Week 18 – February 9, 2014
Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week Amber-Lee Kavanagh (Kwantlen Polytechnic University)

There were many deserving nominees for this week’s athlete of the week but it was Kwantlen’s Amber Kavanagh and her performance in a must win weekend that gave her the edge. Kavanagh is a second-year Eagle in the BA – Psychology program. With Douglas, Langara and Kwantlen all sitting within 4 points of each other for the final 2 playoff spots, the weekend results could prove to be the deciding factor on who does not make the playoffs when the final league game is played in 2 weeks. The Eagles played host this past weekend and Kavanagh helped Kwantlen capture its first clean sweep weekend of the PACWEST league season playing Langara College on Thursday, Feb. 6th and Douglas College on Saturday, Feb. 8th. Kavanagh scored 29 points and lead the team in scoring both nights, 16 points against Langara and 13 points against Douglas, recording 21 total rebounds, 5 assists and one steal. The women’s basketball team had a big weekend as they defeated Langara, 57-54, Thursday night and then Douglas, 62-49 on Saturday night to move into 6th place in the PACWEST conference. Entering the weekend, Kwantlen sat two points behind Langara for that last playoff spot but the weekend sweep helped the Eagles move up in the standings ahead of Langara based on the season series tie breaker. Both teams sport a 6-12 record with three games remaining. Kavanagh sits in the top-10 in rebounds and in the top-5 in assists in the PACWEST rankings and will be eager to help her Eagles gain ground on Langara this coming weekend as they make their final road trip of the season at Quest and Capilano.
