Nanaimo…..The KPU Eagles women's soccer team fell 4-0 today to the VIU Mariners on the road at Nanaimo’s Merle Logan Field, which brings their 2014/15 PACWEST CCAA record to 1-3-1.

The Mariners jumped out to an early lead in the opening minutes, after a goal from first-year forward, Madison Leigh, Nanaimo, BC. Before the end of the first half VIU’s third-year forward Carli Rey, Brandon, MB, would increase the gap to 2. The second half saw a much stronger, more cohesive KPU team as they tried to create offensive momentum, but would ultimately remain scoreless throughout the match. KPU goalkeeper Simran Meelu, Abbotsford, BC, played the first 45 minutes.

Minutes into the second half, Mariners’ second-year forward Katie Rodgers, Royston, BC, would beat Eagles’ goalkeeper Chantalle Bracken, Langley, BC, to make the score 3-0. VIU fifth-year forward Samantha Rodgers, Courtenay, BC, would score the fourth and final goal for the Mariners to beat Meelu, back in the game for KPU, at the 82nd minute. VIU goalkeeper, fifth-year Shelby Walker, Victoria, BC, would earn the shut-out for the Mariners.

The midfielders stood out strong for the Eagles today. This included first-years Pamela Scowby, Coquitlam, BC, Lexi (Alexandria) Gillette, Chilliwack, BC, and Hayley Eburne, Surrey, BC, as well as third-year veteran Gurneet Josan, Surrey, BC.

“Unfortunately letting a goal in during the first minutes was tough early on. The ladies responded well, they tried to fight. We were beaten by a better team today,” Assistant Coach Joan McEachern, “We tried to make some changes offensively, we were able to penetrate in better during the second half. We battled to the end but we have some things to fix.”
