Metro Vancouver.....The KPU Eagles are proud to announce their 'Athletes of the Week' for the week ending Sunday, November 9, 2014 as Amber-Lee Kavanagh, Langley, BC, of women’s basketball and Brenden Bailey, Coquitlam, BC of men's basketball. The teams took on the Capilano University Blues on Friday, November 7th and the Quest University Canada Kermodes on Saturday, November 8th.

Kavanagh, a third-year forward, was a strong veteran force for the Eagles over the weekend. On Friday’s game versus the Blues she scored nine points, had three total rebounds and three assists. On Saturday’s game versus Quest she contributed with seven points, two offensive rebounds, nine defensive rebounds, and three assists.

“Amber’s performance was huge for us against Quest,” said Eagles’ head coach Dan Nayebzadeh, “Her seven points and 11 rebounds in her 22 minutes on the court were crucial, she is a strong leader for our team and consistently gives 100% in all she does.”

Bailey, a first-year guard, carried the team in scoring with a home-opener weekend combined total of 52 points. On Friday’s game against the Blues, Bailey shot 7/25 field goals, 3/9 three-pointers, and 12/19 free throws. On Saturday’s game against the Kermodes he shot 7/20 field goals and 9/16 free throws.

“Brenden is very relentless, he played very hard at both ends of the court,” stated Eagles’ head coach Vladimir Nikić, “He showed he can be consistent and play through rough contact."

The KPU Eagles Department of Athletics & Recreation enters its 14th season of interuniversity competition. The Eagles are members of the PACWEST conference and play in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with 100 student-athletes participating on eight varsity teams in men’s and women’s basketball, soccer, badminton and golf. KPU athletics plays its home games at the Eagles’ Nest (Surrey Campus), Northview Golf & Country Club, Newton Athletic Park, all located in Surrey, BC and the Ace Badminton Centre in Richmond, BC.  The Eagles are active in the conference with staff members on various advisory committees and competing to host both provincial and national championships. The student-athletes are mainly from the lower mainland but KPU’s rosters have included student-athletes from North America, South America, Asia and Europe.
