Metro Vancouver…..The KPU Eagles welcomed the Langara College Falcons and the VIU Mariners to the Eagles Nest in Surrey, BC for the 2015 PACWEST Badminton Provincials held February 14th and 15th. The first day of competition determined the team champions for the PACWEST, while the second day’s individual events determined representatives for the PACWEST at the 2015 CCAA Badminton Nationals held in Halifax, NS, hosted by the University of King’s College Blue Devils (ACAA). All three PACWEST schools will have representation in Halifax when Nationals take place March 4th to 7th.
The Langara College Falcons were crowned the 2015 PACWEST champions on Saturday with a total of 949 points accumulated over three regular season tournaments. The VIU Mariners earned silver with 869 points while KPU finished at 736 points for the bronze.
“Coming into today, we knew it was going to be a real battle as we were holding a real slim lead after tournament two. There were some surprises and some close matches the entire day,” stated Langara’s head coach Mark Petreman, “Overall I think I was really happy with the commitment and improvement of all my team players and we learned how important it was to have depth on our bench. Overall the tournament was run well, it was exciting badminton, and I thought the level of competition of the teams was really strong.”

Sunday’s individual events brought a high level of competition and intensity to the Eagles’ Nest as players battled hard in women’s singles, men’s singles, women’s doubles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles.

The KPU Eagles Department of Athletics & Recreation enters its 14th season of interuniversity competition. The Eagles are members of the PACWEST conference and play in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with 100 student-athletes participating on eight varsity teams in men’s and women’s basketball, soccer, badminton and golf. KPU athletics plays its home games at the Eagles’ Nest (Surrey Campus), Northview Golf & Country Club, Newton Athletic Park, all located in Surrey, BC and the Ace Badminton Centre in Richmond, BC. The Eagles are active in the conference with staff members on various advisory committees and competing to host both provincial and national championships. The student-athletes are mainly from the lower mainland but KPU’s rosters have included student-athletes from North America, South America, Asia and Europe.
