Eagles 2014/15 varsity season celebrated, Anderegg & Rose 'Athletes of the Year'

Metro Vancouver…..The KPU Eagles department of athletics & recreation is proud to recognize the milestones and achievements of their athletes from the 2014/15 varsity season. The Eagles celebrated with their athletes, coaching staff, and honoured guests last night from their host hotel, the Sheraton Vancouver Guildford in Surrey, BC and kicked off the evenings festivities with words of wisdom from decorated women’s soccer alumna and KPU alumna Shanay Sangha.

In their 14th year as a department, the Eagles saw six out of seven programs reach the post-season, as well as multiple PACWEST All-Star honours, a 2014/15 PACWEST Coach of the Year award, and a CCAA Badminton National silver medal in women’s doubles. In addition to celebrating the Eagles hard work at the regional and national conference levels and Team MVPs, the 2014/15 KPU major hardware was given in recognition of tremendous athletic and academic achievements. Congratulations to all who were honoured.

President’s Outstanding Athlete Awards (Athlete of the Year)
Third-year Eagles women’s soccer defender Jessica Anderegg, Surrey, BC, and veteran golfer Thomas Rose, Surrey, BC were named the 2014/15 President’s Outstanding Athlete Award winners.

Eagles 2014/15 'Athletes of the Year' Thomas Rose & Jessica Anderegg

Anderegg is a tireless worker who gives her all on and off the field. She was a strong and constant source of skill and support for the young Eagles team. Paired with first-year goalkeepers and defenders, she worked hard to help the team improve their standings in 2014/15. Named a first team defender to this year’s PACWEST all-star team, she is also a member of the KPU Eagles varsity council.

Rose was named a PACWEST All-Star and finished fifth out of 60 PACWEST golfers in 2014 with a four tournament score of 589. He went on to represent KPU at CCAA National Championship in Quebec City where he finished tied for 47th at the 2015 PING CCAA Golf Championship with a two-day score of 154. He is also a member of the KPU Eagles varsity council.

KPU Team Award (Highest GPA)
The women’s basketball team earned the highest mean grade point average in the department for the 2014 Fall semester with a GPA of 3.01.

Charter Bus Lines Varsity Athletic Academic Awards
The Charter Bus Lines award is given to one female varsity athlete and one male varsity athlete who have achieved the highest GPA in their first-year of study.

This year’s recipients are women’s basketball point guard Amelia Worrell, Liberia, Costa Rica, and men’s basketball power forward Nick Smith, Surrey, BC.

Mary & Pius McEachern Memorial Award
In memory of Pius & Mary McEachern, this award is given to a women’s soccer player. The McEacherns were strong advocates of the benefits of higher education and believed loyalty, persistence, and hard work were the keys to success.

Third-year women’s soccer midfielder Rachel Gledstone, Surrey, BC is the 2014/15 award recipient.

Patrick Dooley Memorial Award
In memory of Patrick Dooley, who passed away suddenly at the age of 17. This award is given to a returning men’s basketball player who demonstrates leadership on and off the court. The values of leadership and service to others were traits most embodied by Pat, who was an active student-athlete in volleyball, basketball, golf, and soccer.

This year’s recipient is third-year point guard Spencer Maichin, Delta, BC.

Shewfelt Family Endowed Award for Athletics
First-year power forward Nick Smith, Surrey, BC is the first recipient of the new Shewfelt Family Endowed Award for Athletics. Smith maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.67 or greater as well as demonstrated leadership in the classroom and on the court.

KPU Eagles Fifth-Year Student-Athletes
The Eagles also recognized the achievements of their fifth-year student-athletes who completed their university athletic careers.

The department of athletics and recreation also saw change and growth in their office this past summer with the hiring of two new head coaches, the establishment of the KPU Eagles Athletic Clinic on the Surrey Campus, the expansion of the Athletic Therapy program, and the establishment of a sports information and marketing portfolio. The Eagles also worked in strong collaborations with KPU’s Future Students Office, the creation of the ‘Eagles Soar’ program with KPU’s Student Development & Success, the Kwantlen Students Association, and multiple other on- and off-campus partners.

The Eagles thank you for your support in 2014/15 and look forward to engaging the KPU and outward communities as they gear up to celebrate their 15th Anniversary in 2015/16.

The KPU Eagles Department of Athletics & Recreation enters its 14th season of interuniversity competition. The Eagles are members of the PACWEST conference and play in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with 100 student-athletes participating on eight varsity teams in men’s and women’s basketball, soccer, badminton and golf. KPU athletics plays its home games at the Eagles’ Nest (Surrey Campus), Northview Golf & Country Club, Newton Athletic Park, all located in Surrey, BC. The Eagles are active in the conference with staff members on various advisory committees and competing to host both provincial and national championships. The student-athletes are mainly from the lower mainland but KPU’s rosters have included student-athletes from North America, South America, Asia and Europe.
