New endowment breaks barriers for women in post-secondary education

Fri, Apr 24, 2015

Metro Vancouver, B.C. – A new endowment at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) will help break barriers for women hoping to pursue post-secondary education.

The Project Bloom Breaking Barrier’s Endowed Award is named after a signature Delta community event hosted annually in support of International Women’s Day. Each year, a $1,000 scholarship will support a single mother, aboriginal woman, female immigrant or woman with a disability who wishes to pursue post-secondary education at KPU.

“Access to education is an important pillar of what we do here at KPU, and the foundation is excited to continue to support women who are breaking barriers,” said Marlyn Graziano, KPU director of external and governmental affairs.

This year marked the first time Project Bloom was hosted by the KPU Foundation. The university celebrated women and leadership with over 150 guests from across the Lower Mainland. Through ticket sales and generous donations, over $20,000 was raised to fund the endowment.

For seven years, Project Bloom has encouraged collaboration and community between women. The event’s goal is to foster partnership, strategic networking and purposeful fundraising efforts that will help women grow their cohort of powerful resources and support.

“It’s the mission of Project Bloom to serve as a platform to empower women through the meaningful exchange of experiences and expertise, and the 2015 event did just that,” said Lisa Robinson, co-chair of the event’s organizing committee and an advancement officer with the KPU Foundation.

The KPU Foundation builds community and corporate partnerships that benefit students, support faculty and enhance education. Each year, hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships and awards are given to students across disciplines. More on the KPU Foundation is available at kpu.ca/foundation.
