Eighth season of Green Wednesdays launches next week

Tue, Oct 6, 2015

Langley, B.C. – The silver screen will turn green next week with the launch of a new season of Green Wednesdays at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU).

Hosted by the KPU School of Horticulture in collaboration with the non-profit Green Ideas Network, the eighth season of the eco-minded film series will feature dynamic documentaries and discussions on the ways energy, agriculture and consumption impact our daily lives.

Beginning Oct. 14, everyone is welcome to join KPU students and faculty as they screen movies that tackle climate change, urban and rural sustainability, energy production, agriculture and food. The screenings often include informed guest speakers who spark spirited conversations on universal environmental and social issues.

“The films and subsequent discussions with students and the public challenge us to consider ways we can make our everyday world, and our future world, a better place for all living creatures,” said Betty Cunnin, KPU horticulture instructor and faculty support for Green Wednesdays.

The season kickoff event will feature director Scott Renyard and his film The Pristine Coast – a “persuasive and urgent” film about the collapsing pacific marine ecosystem off the coast of British Columbia. The event coincides with BC Rivers Day, as well as WaterWeeks, an annual series of events hosted by the Langley Environmental Partners Society that encourages residents of all ages to experience, appreciate and take action to protect their community’s watershed, wildlife and natural resources.

Held at KPU Langley, the screenings run the second Wednesday of each month, and are graciously sponsored by: A Bread Affair, Nature’s Fare Markets, Vancity, Ethical Bean Coffee Company and Bullfrog Power.

Admission to each event is by donation. Registration is recommended due to limited seating. Most evenings are concluded with free draws for abundant – and usually tasty – door prizes.

Green Wednesdays encourages the sharing and exploration of ideas to reduce our personal and global ecological footprint. For more information or to register, contact Betty Cunnin at 604.599.3348 or betty.cunnin@kpu.ca.
