Paul Cheung | Owner and Producer of The International Summer Night Market (ISNM) in Richmond

paul cheung"Positively influencing future generations"

My experience in special events started in elementary school where I was a voluntary DJ at dance functions.  However, it led me to my path of becoming an entrepreneur in my early teens, forming a company in the music entertainment industry with my older brother.  After two short years, our business expanded into special events management for The Plaza of Nations at the old Expo grounds.  This was where I built my reputation for producing large scale special events, notably "The Canadian Airlines Chinese New Year Festival" in Vancouver that had over 500 booths and 20 major corporate sponsors.

After 10 years in special events planning, I decided to change careers and thought I would be leaving this industry behind. However, in 2008, there was a surprising turn of events when I was approached by some friends (now my partners) who asked if I could help them to start a new night market in Richmond.  Initially, I offered my expertise on production but soon after, I ended up running the entire operation.  I used my experience to create a fun and exhilarating event that would also stimulate Tourism and the local economy for the City of Richmond by bringing in thousands of visitors every summer!

To help the ISNM continue to grow, my attention was directed towards family values, multiculturalism, local youth and charities.  This initiative has helped ISNM to become known for cultural arts, food, music and a welcoming place to fundraise and increase awareness for many causes.  My business quickly became an important existence for entrepreneurs, governments, tourists, charities, families and multicultural groups to share a common interest.  The ISNM has developed into a venue that people could exchange products, knowledge, ideas and even volunteer at to help others.

As the popularity of the ISNM grew, I began volunteering with charities and joined many associations to provide leadership, guidance to help make a difference for others. I hope to continue to be an influential leader to the younger generation and give back to the community through supporting new talent and non-profit partnerships!

I am very proud to say that "The International Summer Night Market" is now known as “One of the Top Night Markets in the World!"

Eliza Olson | Burns Bog Conservation Society

eliza olson“The Evolution of an Environmentalist”

As a child, Eliza Olson witnessed the destruction of a local pond. A family of ducks was displaced–a chilling experience that would one day lead to a passion to preserve the country’s wetlands. In 1988, Olson learned that part of the bog near her home, in British Columbia’s Lower Mainland, was slated for destruction to make way for a golf course. Horrified at the lack of concern about the destruction of the local peat lands, Olson helped create the Burns Bog Conservation Society. The Society was created as a forum for local residents to meet, discuss and strategize ways to preserve Burns Bog, the largest raised peat bog on the West Coast of North America–and the only bog of its kind. With the help of the Burns Bog Conservation Society Burns Bog was purchased by 4 levels of Government in 2004 and was given international protection in the form of RAMSAR status in 2012.
