Symposium Dates: Wednesday, May 2 to Friday, May 4, 2018

Program Overview

KPU’s second Teaching, Learning, Scholarship & Research Symposium built upon the 2017 Symposium and was an opportunity for faculty members, instructors, students, staff and administrators to learn more about the KPU Community's teaching practices, scholarly inquiry, and research and learning experiences. The Symposium’s workshops, sessions and panels revolved around the theme, “Collaborate, Create, Connect”.

Opening Plenary: Dr. Jo-Ann Archibald on, "Indigeneity and Kwantlen Polytechnic University: Decolonization, Indigenization, and/or Reconciliation?"

Dr. Jo-Ann Archibald

Dr. Jo-Ann Archibald shared perspectives, policy approaches, and practices related to making KPU more respectful and responsive to Indigenous peoples and Indigenous knowledges for which the term ‘Indigeneity’ is used. In a new era of reconciliation advocated in the recent Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (2015), she examined the following questions:  What does it mean to decolonize or Indigenize the University? Why does it matter? How can all those who work and study at KPU be engaged in reconciliation with Indigenous peoples/communities?  How can Indigenous knowledge shape learning and research at KPU in meaningful ways?

Dr. Jo-ann Archibald, Q’um Q’um Xiiem, from the Sto:lo and St’at’imc First Nations in British Columbia, is Professor Emeritus in the Educational Studies Department at the UBC Faculty of Education. She was the former Associate Dean Indigenous Education and the Director of  UBC’s Indigenous Teacher Education Program (NITEP). She received a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree from the University of British Columbia, a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree from Simon Fraser University. Over a 45 year educational career, Jo-ann has been a school teacher, curriculum developer, researcher, university administrator and professor. Jo-ann received an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Kwantlen Polytechnic University in 2017.
