Applied Science (Engineering)

Program Description
Kwantlen offers the full first year of the Applied Science Core program for students wishing to transfer to UBC in the following areas of engineering:
  • Chemical and Biological Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Computer Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Engineering Physics
  • Geological Engineering
  • Integrated Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Metals and Materials Engineering
  • Mining Engineering
Students completing the first year program at Kwantlen are eligible for direct integration into second year engineering at UBC. Students must still apply formally for admission to UBC engineering, as transfer from Kwantlen to UBC is not automatic. Students must contact UBC for minimum CGPA admission requirements.
For students wishing to pursue engineering studies at another university, such as UVic or, SFU students should apply for transfer credit at the receiving institution.
Admission Requirements
Regular Kwantlen admission requirements apply for entry to Applied Science (Engineering) at Kwantlen. Students wishing to complete the program without having to undertake any preparatory courses need to enter with a
  • C or better in Principles of Physics 12;
  • C+ or better in Chemistry 12; and
  • B or better in Principles of Mathematics 12, and
  • B or better in English 12.
Students with a C or C+ in Principles of Mathematics 12 are eligible to write the Mathematics Placement Test to determine suitability for direct entry into first year calculus (MATH 1120).
Students with less than the above standards can still be admitted to Applied Science, but will be required to take the preparatory courses necessary to qualify for registration in the full course program outlined below. Naturally, this will extend the time necessary to complete the first year of engineering.
Priority Registration Package
Students who have all of the above prerequisites and who wish to register in full time studies beginning in September have the option of receiving a priority registration package. Further information regarding this registration option is available through the admissions office. Deadline for application: March 31.
Program Content
For part-time students, many of the courses are offered in both the fall and spring semesters. Courses marked (f) or (sp) are offered only in the fall or spring semester, and those marked (su) are normally also offered on an accelerated basis in May/June. Most of these courses transfer individually with credit for the equivalent course at UBC, but the student must complete a package of Kwantlen’s APSC 1151, CHEM 1110, and CHEM 1210 to receive credit in lieu of UBC’s APSC 150 and CHEM 154. Kwantlen offers a number of second year math and science courses that transfer individually, and a wide range of suitable electives to round out a schedule.

Complementary Studies elective (see below)
Complementary Studies Elective
Most social science and humanities courses will meet the requirements of this 3-credit elective. This includes the disciplines of anthropology, human geography, history, humanities, philosophy, political science, psychology and sociology. The elective course must deal with some of the central issues, methodologies and thought processes of the discipline. Basic language courses (particularly mother tongue), physical geography and geology, statistics, computer science or studio/performance courses in the fine arts or music are not normally judged as satisfying the complementary elective requirement.
Note: Students planning to transfer to UVic should take CPSC 1204 instead of a complementary studies elective.
A second English course at the 1100 level would also meet the complementary elective requirement. In fact, for students who have not completed a minimum of 5 years of study in an English school in Canada or the equivalent in another country where English is the principal language, 6 credits (2 courses) of English 1100 level courses at Kwantlen that transfer to UBC would satisfy both the complementary elective requirement and the English language requirement for admission to UBC. UBC does not give credit for both ENGL 1100 and ENGL 1200
To confirm the transferability of the complementary elective requirement (or the language requirement), it is always advisable to contact the university in question.

Notes on University Transfer
1. Further information about English and elective courses that qualify, or about threshold requirements for admission to an engineering program at the various universities, are available through counselling services.
2. Students intending to transfer to engineering at a university other than UBC should ensure that course selections conform to requirements at that university.
3. Students intending to transfer to UBC or any other university must submit the appropriate application and meet threshold requirements to that institution.

6. Students who especially prefer hands-on practical learning to academic study may wish to consider another pathway to an Engineering degree. Graduates of Kwantlen’s two-year Electronics Engineering Technology programs can take a short bridging program to gain university entry to a third year Engineering degree.
Graduation
Upon successful completion of all the required courses including minimum CGPA of 2.0, students are awarded a Certificate in Applied Science.
