Gerontology-Based Recreation


Start date: September (full-time); September and March (part-time)
The full-time program begins in September and will be completed in June the following year. The part-time program begins in September and March and will be completed in two years.
Description
The graduate of this program will have theoretical and practical knowledge of gerontology, therapeutic recreation interventions, and recreation and leisure programming in the community, senior day centres, and long-term care settings.
Career Opportunities
Some of our graduates hold the following positions: Recreation Assistant, Recreation Programmer, Assistant Administrator Adult Day Care, Director of Hospice, Coordinator of Activities, Coordinator of Seniors Aquatic Program, Director of Peer Counselling, Support Worker for Mentally Challenged Adults, Activation Worker in Aids/HIV Unit, Adult Day Care owner/operators, Activity Aides, and Coordinator of Senior Leisure Activities.

  • 100 hours of volunteer service in recreation setting
  • Current required immunization for health care workers

  • CPR is required before practicum placement

Graduation
Upon successful completion of all the theoretical and practical courses at the required status, students will be awarded a Kwantlen University College Certificate in Gerontology-Based Recreation.
Note
* GBRC 1090 Access for Geriatric Activity Coordinators
Students who have a Kwantlen CE Citation or Certificate from the Geriatric Activity Coordinator Program or equivalent can take GBRC 1090 and apply for advance standing into the program.
