CERTIFICATE IN DRAFTING

The Drafting/CADD Technologies department is currently working on changes to the programs that will provide multiple entry and exit points and training more focused on specialties. It is expected this program will be replaced with a two-year program – Diploma in Computer Aided Drafting and Design – in 2007.
This one-year certificate program prepares students for a career as a drafting technician. Using the most advanced CADD (Computer Aided Design & Drafting) software, students will learn to produce drawings from concept sketches, design information, codes and specifications as per industry standards for production by builders and manufacturers.
3D graphics are quickly taking over the industry and we are one of the first drafting programs to include 3D software in the architectural, mechanical and process piping projects. For further information you can visit the Trades website at www.kwantlen.ca/trades

Drafting graduates may pursue a career in a variety of employment situations in architectural, engineering, manufacturing or municipal offices, or in a production /construction setting.
After a few years in drafting many of our graduates move on to positions in sales, customer service, production management, estimating, CAD and network management and contract services (self-employment). Responsibilities can include design team management, project management of small projects, and production scheduling.
Students must indicate which specialty they wish to take at time of enrollment. Students might be required to take the Drafting Core at a different Campus than their chosen Specialty depending on space & enrollment. They will transfer to the Specialty Campus upon completion of the Drafting Core.
All of these programs are expected to move to the new Cloverdale Campus in 2007
Space may be limited in some specialties. Seats will be assigned on first-come first-served basis. Some specialties may not be offered in each semester. In this event, students wishing to take that specialty will be notified prior to the start date of the program. They can choose another option, or wait until the next scheduled session of their chosen specialty.

The evening program is competency based and takes advantage of modularized course material to supplement instructor-directed learning. Each course is broken down into modules representing a small, specialized area of drafting that can be studied, practiced, and mastered, allowing extra time in difficult areas and using less time in others.
In addition to general Kwantlen University College requirements, the following admission prerequisites also apply:
Applicants for admission are considered on an individual basis. An applicant’s educational background and/or work experience may be accepted as part of the program’s ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS. Applicants seeking placement based on past education or experience must participate in an interview with the coordinator to determine the applicant’s placement level. Applicants may be required to produce documentation regarding past education and experience. (Placement testing may still be required depending on the interview outcome). Students with mental or physical impairments, who may require program accomondations, should contact the Program Coordinator at 604.599.2946 to discuss required skills and competencies and a Disability Advisor at 604.599.3233 to ensure appropriate accomondations can be arranged.
An applicant may have met the above prerequisites in secondary school or through secondary or post-secondary courses and programs offered by Kwantlen or adult educational facilities.
An applicant may have gained both academic and related technology skills in a less formalized way and would be considered for admission to the program.
Upgrading for Entrance Requirements
If one or both of the requirements have not been completed or waived, the student must arrange (through Admissions) to take appropriate placement testing to assess his or her Math and English skills. Upgrading can then be arranged if necessary.
Applicants should have the ability to work well with co-workers as a member of a drafting/design team, which includes the ability to communicate in both written and oral English. The ability to pay attention to detail and the ability to visualize in two- and three-dimensions is an asset.
Note
Program applicants benefit from having basic computer knowledge such as E-mail, Internet, file management, working knowledge of Windows environment, basic operating system functions and text editing.
Applicants can arrange to acquire these basic computer skills ahead of time through Academic Career Preparation upgrading or by entering the program early through prior arrangement with the Drafting Coordinator at 604.599.2946.
Students will normally take the Drafting Core and one specialty to complete the Certificate level program. Courses and requirements currently under review.
Students wishing to transfer to the drafting program at another campus for a particular specialty should discuss this option with the instructor.
Upgrading Students can attend for a short time in the evening (part-time or full-time) to take one or more of the following CADD courses (as space permits)
Students must complete 46 Drafting credits to graduate but can take a variety of extra courses as options (time permitting). Under review.
Upon successful completion of the Mechanical Drafting program, students will be awarded a Certificate in Mechanical Drafting.
Upon successful completion of the Electrical Drafting program, students will be awarded a Certificate in Electrical Drafting.
Upon successful completion of the Architectural Drafting program, students will be awarded a Certificate in Architectural Drafting.
Upon successful completion of the Structural Drafting program, students will be awarded a Certificate in Structural Drafting.
