General Business Studies Certificate

DESCRIPTION

The one-year General Business Studies Certificate Program is designed to provide students with a broad range of basic business skills and an understanding of the business environment. Some classes are offered during evenings to accommodate part-time students and the program completion time may be extended up to a maximum of ten years.

Students who complete the required courses for this certificate can receive full credit for their work and continue their study toward a two year career-oriented diploma program at Kwantlen University College. Most of the courses included in this program are transferable to other universities and colleges (please refer to the BC Transfer Guide at www.bccat.ca for details about the transfer status of courses to specific institutions).

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

General admission requirements apply.
Students wishing to complete the program without having to undertake any preparatory courses must enter with English 12 with a B grade or better, or equivalent.


CONTENT

Students must take a total of nine foundation courses and one elective:

  • Accounting (ACCT 1110 or 2293)*

  • Business (BUSI 1110 or 1215)*

  • Two Computer Business Systems courses (CBSY 1105 and one other CBSY)

  • Economics (ECON 1101 or 1150)*

  • Marketing (MRKT 1199)

  • Mathematics (or ACCT 1130)**

  • Applied Communications (CMNS 1140) or
    English (ENGL 1100 or 1110)*

  • Statistics (or ACCT 1230)

  • One elective from any of the above disciplines

Note

* ACCT 2293, BUSI 1215, ECON 1150 and either ENGL 1100 or 1110 are recommended for students who intend to pursue both a diploma and Kwantlen’s BBA degree in future.

Note

** ACCT 1130 is the business math course for career programs; however, any equivalent or higher math course may be used to meet this requirement. ACCT 1230 is the business statistics course for career programs; however, any college statistics course may be used to meet this requirement.

Normal Course Progression (Full-Time)

This sample schedule will assist students who wish to complete the General Business Studies Certificate Program in one year. Although this schedule is highly recommended, course registration is subject to availability. Students may choose to take some courses out of sequence and create alternate timetables that still meet the certificate requirements.

    • ACCT 1230 Business Statistics

    • CBSY 2205 Computers and Information Processing

    • One Elective Any general liberal education elective or university college-level course

  • Semester 2

    • ACCT 1110 Principles of Accounting I*

    • ACCT 1130 Business Mathematics

    • ACCT 1230 Business Statistics

    • CBSY 2205 Computers and Information Processing

    • Plus One Elective Any General Liberal Education Elective or University Transfer Course

*Note

Students intending to pursue both a diploma and Kwantlen’s BBA degree in future should substitute ENGL 1100, ECON 1150 and ACCT 2293 for these courses.

* For Graduation Purposes only:

  • credit will NOT be granted for ACCT 1110 or ACCT 1210 if credit has been previously granted for ACCT 2293

  • credit will NOT be granted for ACCT 2293 if credit has previously been granted for ACCT 1110 or ACCT 1210

GRADUATION

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be awarded a Certificate in General Business Studies.
