Bachelor of Business Administration in Human Resources Management

DESCRIPTION 

The Bachelor of Business Administration Program in Human Resources Management provides full-time and part-time intensive study for students wishing to undertake studies in the HRM field.

Based on extensive consultations with business leaders, and explicit reference to the Required Professional Capabilities of the Certified Human Resources Practitioner (CHRP) designations, the degree is designed to prepare students to achieve the CHRP designation and for a range of Human Resources Professional roles.

This Degree is designed as a four year program which can be accessed in either Year 1 from direct admission from High School or Year 3 from a variety of diploma-level (60 credit) programs as outlined below.

Degree classes are scheduled for days, evenings and weekends to allow students to further their education while maintaining current employment.

Students acquire:

  • Technical business skills through subject specific studies
  • General success skills through employability skills studied; and
  • A better understanding of human society and how to contribute to it through liberal education studies

Some unique features of the program are: 

  • Direct incorporation of Intended Learning Outcomes based on the Certified Human Resources Professional Requirements and industry feedback;
  • Practicum, learning partnerships with business, applied projects and assignments and ongoing work experience;
  • Full block transfer of credits from recognized college and university programs;
  • Exit/re-entry flexibility, where a student can complete the program at their own pace. This allows for changing outside-of-schools time requirements and does not lock a student into a rigid program, structure and time frame;
  • Professional development for individuals seeking higher level training
OPTIONS: REGULAR AND CO-OP MODE

Students may graduate from either the Bachelor of Business Administration Degree mode or the optional Co-operative Education mode.

Students applying for Co-op must complete all prescribed courses with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. In order to receive a Co-operative Education designation, the following criteria must be met in addition to the 120 credit hours of course work:

  • Completion of COOP 1101
  • Satisfactory completion of one eight-month work term or two four-month work terms  
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS TO CO-OP EDUCATION

Co-op admission is optional/selective. Students wishing to choose the Co-op option must register into COOP 1101 upon admission into the degree program. If you have already taken COOP 1101, contact the Co-op office to indicate your interest in the Co-op option. Prerequisites for the first co-op work term (COOP 3210) are COOP 1101, permission of the instructor and a minimum 2.70 grade point average in any five program courses and permission of the instructor.

In addition to academic requirements, satisfactory work evaluations are required in this co-op option.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Depending upon their capabilities and experience, a graduate may be able to enter or advance within the field of human resources management. The BBA in Human Resources Management has been designed to incorporate the Required Professional Capabilities of the Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) credential as issued by the B.C Human Resources Management Association.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

Students entering the program in Year 1 require the following:

  • BC English 12 with a B grade or better, or equivalent
  • Math 11 (Principles) with a C+ grade or better, or equivalent or 
  • Math 12 (Applications) with a B grade or better, or equivalent

Students entering the program in Year 3, upon completion of two years study, require one of the following:

  • Kwantlen’s Business Management Diploma with a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher, and a C+ or higher in Accounting and a C+ or higher in statistics
  • Completion of a business-related diploma from a recognized college or university, with a minimum of 60 credits, a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher, and a C+ or higher in Accounting and a C+ or higher in Statistics
BRIDGING PROGRAM COURSES

Students who do not have a two-year business-related diploma but have completed a minimum of 60 post-secondary credits from a recognized post-secondary institution including six bridging courses (credits from bridging courses can be part of 60 credits). Students do not have to repeat any courses they have already taken, including equivalent courses from other institutions. All of these courses are widely offered at Kwantlen.

CONTINUANCE REQUIREMENTS

In order to continue into the third year of Kwantlen’s Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Human Resources Management students must meet the following requirements:

  • Achieved a cumulative program GPA of 2.7 or better;
  • Successfully completed the first year of English and Applied Communication requirements; and
  • A C+ or better in Accouting, and a C+ or better in Statistics
PRIOR LEARNING ASSESSMENT (PLA)

If the student wishes to attempt PLA credits they should contact the Advising office and the PLA Coordinator in the academic department offering the course for which they are seeking PLA credit (e.g. a student desiring PLA credit for BUSI 1210 – Essentials of Management, must contact Educational Advising and the Business Management Department directly). This assessment should be initiated at least six months in advance of the intended start date.

CONTENT

The complete degree program will require 120 semester credit hours of post-secondary courses. This includes the initial two years of post-secondary education equal to 60 semester credit hours if the student entered at third year. The third and fourth year courses will provide an additional 60 semester credits hours consisting of 30 semester credit hours of the Human Resources Management studies and 30 semester credit hours of other Business and Liberal Education studies.

The courses in third and fourth year are rigourous and demanding. Prior to registering, the student should carefully consider the  time requirements of part-time versus fill-time study based on their individual work and personal situation.

Note
All courses are not offered at all times or on all campuses. It is important to ensure work and personal schedules can accommodate the posted schedule times prior to committing to  the program.

Students are able to enter and exit in the final two years of the program as their needs change. Students must complete all of the required courses to graduate, but they are not required to do them in the stated order. They may take longer than a year at each level if they prefer to study part-time . All courses are three credit hours unless otherwise noted.

Several courses are prerequisites and must be successfully completed before a student will be admitted to other courses. As well, some courses are not offered every term and /or during evenings and /or on all campuses. Please consult an Educational Advisor for help in planning a program and for further details.

The remaining three courses are electives. These electives can be any college courses numbered 1100 or higher that carry academic credit (university transfer courses are recommended). They can be selected by students to meet their prerequisites requirements, or to meet specific student needs and interests.

LIBERAL EDUCATION

All Business degrees require the completion of 15 credit hours of Liberal Education. They are made up as follows:

Required – One third or fourth year Ethics course to be selected from:

English Requirements

One post-secondary English course (such as ENGL 1100) is  a graduation requirement for all Kwantlen University College degrees. If English was not taken prior to BBA entrance, students must take ENGL 1100 (or equivalent) in addition to the above courses, resulting in 123 credits to graduate.

Breadth Requirements

Effective September 2008 students entering the program will be required to complete 42 of the total 120 credit hours as breadth/liberal education electives in order to graduate. For more information please see an Educational Advisor.

GRADUATION

Upon successful completion of this program, students are awarded a Bachelor of Business Administration in Human Resources Management.
