Biology

Kwantlen University College offers a full range of first and second year Biology courses. All Biology courses (except BIOL 2421) have both lecture and laboratory components.

BIOL 1112 – Biology Today – is designed for students majoring in areas other than Biology. The course focuses on current advances in human heredity and evolution and examines some of the most exciting and controversial topics in current day Biology, including cloning, stem cell research and genetically modified foods. In the labs students make a DNA fingerprint, isolate and amplify their own DNA and have a chance to use equipment found in high-tech facilities. There are two 2-hour classes and one 2-hour lab per week.

BIOL 1110 and BIOL 1210 – Introductory Biology I & II – are required for students majoring in Biology and are prerequisites for all second year Biology courses. These courses operate on an Open Lab system in which students may do their lab work at any time during the laboratory’s opening hours. (Open hours are posted at the lab entrance and are available on the Biology department’s web site). Students should expect to spend as many as six hours per week in the laboratory, and must consider this time commitment when timetabling. BIOL 1110 and 1210 have one 2-hour class each week in addition to this lab time.

BIOL 1160 and 1260 – Anatomy and Physiology – have one 2-hour class and a 1-hour question-and-answer period each week in addition to open lab time.

Second year courses have two 2-hour classes per week combined with a scheduled 2-hour lab (BIOL 2330), open lab time (BIOL 2320, 2321), or open lab time and scheduled field trips (BIOL 2322).

Students intending to transfer to third year at SFU or UBC are advised to take at least two, and preferably all, of the following courses: BIOL 2320, 2321, 2322, 2330 and 2421.

These are Biology courses, and the use of animal and plant tissues may be required.
