Admission


All applicants to Kwantlen University College, regardless of country of origin or citizenship status, must be able to undertake studies in the English language. Any applicant may be required to produce evidence of competency to undertake studies in the English language. An applicant may be required to take a test of facility in the English language before admission to a program. Competence in the English language is required for listening, reading, speaking and writing. Most courses offered are reading and writing intensive. Applicants who cannot produce evidence of competency or who do not meet the standards set by a test of facility in the English language should inquire about Adult High School Completion (ABE), or Post Secondary Program Readiness (PSP), or English courses or English as a Second Language or English Language Training programs.

General Admission

Notice for Applicants applying for admission to open registration or selective entry programs effective September, 2003:

Applicants applying for admission for the Fall 2003 semester or later (application date on or after November 1, 2002) to open registration or selective entry programs will be required to meet an English proficiency requirement of a minimum of "C" grade in English 12 or equivalent prior to registering for courses. In addition to "C" in English 12, the following achievements can be used to meet this admission requirement:

For certain courses and for certain selective entry programs the English proficiency requirement may be higher (refer to the particular program section for further details).

Students who do not meet this English requirement will not be granted admission to open registration courses or selective entry programs but can be granted admission to Adult High School Completion (ABE) or Post Secondary Program Readiness (PSP) or English as an Additional Language courses. Please note that admission to open registration, Adult High School Completion (ABE), Post Secondary Program Readiness (PSP) and English as an Additional Language is not a guarantee of registration into specific courses. For English proficiency requirements for fixed term or continuous intake programs refer to the particular program section for further details.

In order to be eligible for admission to a program or course at the University College, an applicant must also meet one of the following requirements:

  • Regular Admission: Anyone who is a graduate of a BC Secondary school on any program, or the equivalent from another school system, is eligible to attend Kwantlen University College. Applicants who are missing only one (1) course for graduation are also eligible to attend, provided they have passed English 12 or Communications 12 or the equivalent.
  • Mature Student Admission: Anyone who is not a secondary school graduate or equivalent but who will be nineteen (19) years of age on the first day of classes for the term is eligible to attend Kwantlen University College.
  • Underage Admission: Anyone who is not a secondary school graduate but who is seventeen (17) years of age or older and has not been in regular attendance at school for a minimum of one (1) year, is eligible to appeal for permission to attend Kwantlen University College. Applicants in this category will normally only be accepted into the Adult High School Completion (ABE) or English Language Training (ELT) program. Admission of underage applicants to other programs will be considered on an individual basis.
  • Special Admission: Anyone who does not qualify for admission in one of the above categories may appeal for admission as a Special Admission student. The applicant must provide a rationale as to why an exception to Admissions policy should be considered. Testing and attendance at an interview may be required and the applicant must provide supporting documentation as requested. A Special Admission applicant is admitted to a specific program and may not change programs without the prior approval of the Registrar or the Associate Registrar (or designate).
  • Concurrent Studies: Students who are enrolled in grade 12 in a BC Secondary School may be admitted to Kwantlen to pursue Concurrent Studies as General Studies students. Normally, no more than 3 semester hours credit may be applied toward the requirements of a certificate program. Similarly, no more than 6 semester hours credit may be applied toward the requirements of a diploma program.

The following conditions will apply to concurrent studies:

  • the applicant must have achieved a B standing in academic subjects in the last full year of high school completed
  • the applicant must be enrolled in a BC Secondary School at the grade 12 level, in a program that meets regular Kwantlen University College entry requirements
  • the applicant must have the written recommendation of the secondary school principal
  • the applicants must have the written consent of his or her parent(s) or legal guardian if under the legal age of majority on the opening day of classes
  • the applicant must have the support of the Dean responsible for the course(s) in which she or he plans to enrol
  • admission will generally be limited to one semester only; however, it may be renewable with the continued support of the school principal and the Dean
  • Students in Concurrent Studies will be treated as regular students in most respects except that they may not register in a full range of courses and their eligibility to register is valid for one semester only (unless renewed as above). Standard transcripts will be issued and fees and deadlines will be as for regular students.
  • Kwantlen reserves the right to limit the number of seats available in total and per class.
  • Applications for semesterized courses must be submitted by the published application deadline for the semester. For other courses, please apply at least one month before the start of classes. International students should consult the International Education Office for deadline information.
  • Students who have enrolled in concurrent studies at other recognized post-secondary institutions prior to secondary school graduation may also be eligible for transfer credit.

International Student Admission

Kwantlen University College accepts international applications from individuals who meet admission requirements to the University College and who are able to undertake studies in the English language. All international applicants are required to demonstrate English language proficiency prior to admission to Kwantlen. To be admitted to post secondary studies, applicants must provide one of the following to demonstrate English language proficiency:

  • a TOEFL score of 550 or higher on the paper based test and a TWE score of 4.0 or higher (under review)
  • an official TOEFL score of 213 or higher on the computer based test and an Essay score of 4.0 or higher (under review)
  • BC Grade 12 English with minimum C grade or an equivalent from a Canadian secondary school
  • Language Proficiency Index (LPI) essay score of 25, or 24 with English Usage of 6 or higher
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.5 with scores of at least 6 on the individual tests
  • Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) score of 85 or higher
  • a post-secondary English course, for which Kwantlen awards transfer credit, with a minimum C grade

Selective-entry career or vocational programs usually have program-specific admissions requirements, including English competency levels, which must be met in addition to the general admission requirements and the English language proficiency requirement.

International applicants are advised that TOEFL, IELTS and MELAB results do not assess a person's ability to undertake English or Communications courses. Students planning to enrol in an English and/or Communications course are required to meet the course prerequisites as listed in the current edition of the Registration Guide and Timetable.

International applicants to English as a Second Language (EASL) must provide a TOEFL score of 400 or higher with a TWE score of 2.0 or higher. However, international applicants currently residing in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia may contact the Admissions office to make arrangements to write a placement test, instead of the TOEFL, to meet the English proficiency requirement for EASL.

Before final acceptance will be granted to a program, international applicants must submit a valid and current Student Authorization for the entire semester for which they have applied, and submit proof that they have arranged for medical insurance to cover the duration of their studies at Kwantlen. Students who are eligible for medical coverage under the British Columbia Medical Services Plan (BCMSP) are required to maintain coverage through that plan.

The University College enforces Citizenship and Immigration Canada's policy that international students study full time while in Canada.

International applicants who receive Canadian Permanent Residency status must submit their original immigration documentation to the Admissions office before the start of classes to qualify for domestic fees. Tuition from previous semesters and the application fee will not be adjusted or refunded.

Students from the United States of America should be aware that they must graduate from high school, obtain their GED, or pass a United States government approved exam deemed equivalent to high school in order to participate in the U.S. Federal Loans program.

Admission to a Program

Once an applicant has met one of the University College admission requirements, she or he may be considered for admission to a specific program. Each program has a different set of admission requirements. For some programs, such as University Studies, an applicant who has satisfied the general University College admission requirement has also satisfied the program admission requirement. For other programs, there may be several specific admission requirements in addition to the general University College admission requirement.

Open Registration

An open registration program is an associate degree, diploma or certificate program for which the program admission requirements are the same as the general admission requirements. In other words, there are no specific program admission requirements. Qualified applicants are admitted to these programs based on date of application. Most semester-based programs are open registration programs or have an open registration component.

Kwantlen is committed to accepting all qualified applicants who apply on or before the application cut-off date. Because we cannot predict the course needs of each applicant, the number of courses desired by qualified applicants can exceed the number of spaces available in courses. Therefore, acceptance to Kwantlen University College is not a guarantee of registration in any or all of the courses or course sections an applicant may desire. It is important that students be flexible in their course choices, be open to attending classes on more than one campus, and be persistent in their attempts to register.

Selective Entry

A selective entry program is a degree, diploma or certificate program in which there are a limited number of spaces that are filled through an established selection process. Qualified applicants for selective entry programs are offered admission to the program based on date of application or date of qualification and/or a computer generated random selection and/or non-academic point system. Selective entry programs include the following:

Fixed Term

A fixed term program is a certificate or citation program that has a limited number of seats and begins and ends on dates that are usually different from the regular semester dates. Admission to most fixed term programs requires a selection process based on specific program admission requirements. Qualified applicants for fixed term programs are wait-listed by date of qualification.

Continuous Intake

A continuous-intake program is a certificate or citation program in which there are a limited number of seats that are continuously filled from a wait-list as space becomes available. There are no fixed start and end dates for the program. Instead, each student starts and ends the program on an individual basis. Admission to most continuous-intake programs requires a selection process based on specific program admission requirements. Qualified applicants for continuous intake programs are wait-listed by date of qualification.

Application Timelines for Programs

Applications to Kwantlen University College and to particular programs will only be received within a specific interval of time prior to the start of a program intake.

Note: For applications received through the Web, the application date will be the date that the complete application, including the application fee and all required documentation, is received.

Applications for admission or re-admission to a particular intake of an open registration program may be submitted in accordance with the following timelines:

Applications for admission or re-admission received by the application cut-off date will be assigned a registration appointment time as outlined under the section headed Registration Priority.

In some instances, applications may be accepted after the cut-off date. If so, these applicants will be assigned a lower registration priority based on date of application. Due to the extra time required for review, applications for Special Admission or Concurrent Studies, as well as from International Applicants or applicants who were required to withdraw, will only be accepted up to the application cut-off date.

Important: An applicant whose application has been rejected, or who has been accepted for admission but does not register by the end of late registration, or who withdraws or is dropped from all courses, must re-apply for admission in accordance with the established application acceptance dates above. Applications will not be carried over from one program intake to the next.

Semester-Based Selective Entry

Unless otherwise specified by a particular program, applications for admission or re-admission for a particular intake of a selective entry program may be submitted in accordance with the following timelines:

Applications will only be accepted after the application cut-off date but before the start of classes if it appears that the program intake will not be filled by applicants who met the application cut-off date.

Applicants who are not selected for a program intake or who are selected but do not register are required to re-apply. Applications will not be carried over from one program intake to the next. Re-applicants must be prepared to go through the full admissions review process even though they may have met the admission requirements at the time of the original application.

Continuous-Intake

Applications for continuous-intake programs may be submitted up to ten (10) months prior to the first day that the applicant would be eligible to attend Kwantlen University College in accordance with Kwantlen admissions requirements. Applications will be received throughout the year. As the program runs continuously, there is no cut-off date after which applications will no longer be received.

Seats in the program will be filled from the qualified applicant list in order by date of qualification.

How to Apply

New Applicants

New applicants are advised to discuss their educational plans with a Kwantlen Educational Advisor or Counsellor prior to applying. Any applicant who was previously accepted to Kwantlen but never attended or who withdrew or was dropped from all courses in the semester is required to re-apply for admission and will be issued a new application date.

To apply, follow these steps:

Step 1

Obtain an Application for Admission form from any campus Admissions Office or from a Counsellor at one of the secondary schools in the Kwantlen University College region or download and print your own copy of the application form from our Web: www.kwantlen.bc.ca/admission/webapply.htm or apply directly through the Web at either of the following sites:
  • Post-secondary Application Service of BC (PASBC): www.pas.bc.ca or Kwantlen's Web site: www.kwantlen.bc.ca

Step 2

Fill in the application form completely and accurately. Incomplete forms will be returned.

Step 3

Attach supporting documents (high school or post-secondary transcripts and proof of immigration status) and fees where applicable (applications will not be accepted without them). For applications through the Web, please follow the instructions given for submission of fees and documents. Replaceable documents will not be returned. If requested at the time of application, irreplaceable documents will be returned in person or by mail. Certified copies of supporting documentation, submitted in a sealed envelope, will be accepted.
High School Transcripts

Applicants currently attending a high school within BC are not required to submit an official transcript, provided they have made arrangements through their school to have their final transcript submitted directly from the Ministry of Education to Kwantlen. Applicants must include their BC Personal Education Number (PEN) on their application.

Applicants currently attending a high school outside of BC will be required to submit an official transcript of their final grades before they will be eligible for final admission to Kwantlen. An official transcript is a record of your academic progress and standing at the time of leaving school. The transcript must be certified and forwarded directly from the issuing institution or government ministry or delivered by hand in an envelope on which the seal has not been broken.

For applicants who have graduated or left a BC high school within the last five (5) years, their final Grade 12 transcript may be available on the BC Ministry of Education electronic file. To assist in locating it, applicants should provide their BC Provincial Examination ID number or Personal Education Number (PEN) on their application. If the information is not available from the Ministry file, the applicant will be requested to obtain a certified copy from their school.

Applicants who have graduated or left high school outside of BC within five (5) years of applying for admission are required to provide a copy of an official transcript of their final grades before they will be admitted to Kwantlen. An official transcript is a record of your academic progress and standing at the time of leaving school. It must be certified and forwarded directly from the issuing institution or Government ministry or delivered by hand in an envelope on which the seal has not been broken.

Applicants who graduated or left high school more than five (5) years prior to the date on which they intend to commence their studies at Kwantlen are not required to provide a high school transcript unless it is needed to verify that program admission requirements have been satisfied.

Note: Applicants who plan to enrol in courses with high school course prerequisites are required to provide an official high school transcript, even if they have been out of school for more than five (5) years.

Post-secondary Transcripts

Applicants who plan to enrol in courses with college level course prerequisites that have been completed at another post-secondary institution must submit a Request for Transfer Credit form and provide an official transcript for evaluation. This should be done at least six (6) weeks prior to the date the applicant is scheduled to register. There is a fee for evaluation of documents from institutions outside of BC.

Proof of Immigration Status

Proof of immigration status is required. All applicants who are not Canadian citizens must provide their original immigration form or a notarized copy to verify their immigration status.

The application fee must accompany the application package. This is a non-refundable processing fee ($30.00 for Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents; $120.00 for International Applicants).

Step 5

Once the Office of the Registrar has received the completed application package, official notification of acceptance to Kwantlen will be sent by mail (admission to Kwantlen is not a guarantee of course(s) registration).

Applicants for Re-admission

A student who is in continuous attendance at Kwantlen from semester to semester does not need to apply for re-admission each semester. However, a student who does not register at Kwantlen for one (1) or more semesters (excluding summer) or who withdraws or is dropped from all courses in a semester must apply for re-admission using the Application for Admission. The $20.00 re-application fee is required for students who have not attended for three or more consecutive semesters.
