Diploma

Description

This Diploma Program prepares students for entry-level management positions. The two-year Business Management Diploma Program commences each September. It is possible to extend the completion time beyond two years. Some courses are offered on weekday evenings and on Saturdays.

The first year foundation courses provide students with an understanding of the basic elements of the skills and techniques required for effective management, business and the business environment.

In the second year, students take specialized courses in human resources, production and operations management, organizational behaviour, negotiations, business law, enterprise development, business planning and international business. The program emphasizes real world business applications.

Classes are exciting, practical and participatory. They include lecture, exercises, case studies, discussions, in-class assignments, projects, group work, role-play, structured simulations, field trips and guest speakers.

Most of the courses in the diploma program are transferable to other colleges and universities as well as the Bachelor of Business Administration in Entrepreneurial Leadership Degree and the Bachelor of Technology in Information Technology Degree at Kwantlen. (Refer to the Transfer Guide for details about the transfer status of courses to specific institutions.)

Career Opportunities

Graduates find employment in entry-level management positions in both the private and public sectors, including manufacturing, service, profit, and not-for-profit organizations. Some graduates start their own businesses and become entrepreneurs.

Admission Requirements

General Admission requirements apply.

  • Students wishing to complete the program without having to undertake any preparatory courses need to enter with a:
  • BC English 12 with a C+ grade or better, or equivalent.
  • Math 11 with a C grade or better, or equivalent.

Content

Core Requirements

Students must take BUSI 1110, and at least two Computer Business Systems (CBSY) courses. In addition, they must take at least one course from each of the following areas:

* If ECON 1150 is taken, ECON 1250 must also be taken to satisfy the economics requirement in the program. ECON 1250 will apply as an elective course. (Note: ECON 1150 is required for students intending to proceed into Kwantlen's Bachelor of Business Administration degree after completing the diploma.)

Business Management Requirements

In addition to the core requirements, Business Management Diploma students are required to take eight additional designated courses in business.

They are:

BUSI 2315 (Human Relations in Organizations)

BUSI 2390 (Business Law)

BUSI 2405 (Production/Operations Management)

BUSI 2425 (Enterprise Development and Business Planning)

BUSI 2490 (International Business)

Electives

The remaining three courses are electives. These electives can be any college courses numbered 1100 or higher which carry academic credit (university transfer courses are recommended). They can be selected by students to meet prerequisite requirements, or to meet specific student needs and interests. BUSI 1215 (Organizational Behaviour I) is highly recommended as one of the electives.

Graduates are eligible for direct entry into the third year of Kwantlen's Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Entrepreneurial Leadership. They may also receive block transfer credit at the Open University (see Bachelor of Business Administration - Open University) and at the University College of the Fraser Valley. Courses may also transfer individually to UBC, SFU, UVic and other institutions (refer to the transfer guide for specific transfer credit information).

Description

The purpose of the ten-course Business Management Certificate Program is to provide students with an opportunity to expand, improve and update their skills, knowledge and understanding of business management in their areas of interest and need. The program emphasizes real world business applications.

The one-year Business Management Certificate Program begins in September of each year. It is possible to extend the completion time to a maximum of five years from the date of the initial registration.

Students who complete the required courses for this program can receive full credit for their work and continue their study toward the Business Management Diploma Program at Kwantlen University College. Most of the courses included in this program are transferable to other universities and colleges as well as the Bachelor of Business Administration in Entrepreneurial Leadership Degree and the Bachelor of Technology in Information Technology Degree at Kwantlen.
