The History of the DAiSY Award

The DAISY Award is an international program that recognizes and celebrates extraordinary nurses. DAISY (Disease Attaching the Immune System) foundation was founded November 1999 in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who at the age of 33 was diagnosed with idiopathic Thrombocyopenia Purpura. AS the family stated with Patrick in the hospital, they experienced Nursing excellence, not only in practical application, but also in care provision. demonstrating compassion and kindness. When the Barnes family thanked nurses for their exceptional care, the nurses always said they were just doing their job. This made the Barnes family think that nurses didn't see what they did as extraordinary and did not realize the difference that exceptional care made to patients and their loved ones. Therefore, they created the DAISY Award to recognize and appreciate nurses for all they do.
