Overview

Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) invites applications from all eligible faculty for nomination as a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC).

Tier 2 CRCs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., candidates must have less than 10 years of experience as an active researcher in their field at the time of nomination). Tier 2 CRCs are acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to demonstrate world-class leadership. Please consult the CRC website for full information, including further details on nomination criteria.

KPU will be proposing two Tier 2 nominees to the CRC program for the April 2019 deadline. KPU is undertaking this open, transparent and equitable recruitment and nomination process to identify these nominees from current faculty.

KPU endeavors to provide learning and working environments that are inclusive and which are supportive of fair and equitable treatment of all members within its diverse community, no matter their social identity, meaning the various attributes or characteristics with which one strongly identifies and views as integral to their identity. This commitment requires the removal of unnecessary barriers to greater diversity within KPU and requires measures to support and promote inclusiveness, diversity and equity across the University.

KPU particularly encourages applications from members of underrepresented designated groups - women, persons with disabilities, Indigenous peoples and members of visible minorities.

Nomination Process

Applications will be reviewed by an Interdisciplinary Nomination Committee on a rolling basis. All submitted applications will be assessed using the selection criteria for a Tier 2 CRC. Select applicants may also be invited to make a presentation or interview to provide more information regarding their application.

KPU recognizes the legitimate impact that leaves (e.g., maternity leave, leave due to illness) can have on a candidate’s record of research achievement. These leaves will be taken into careful consideration during the assessment process.

Following recommendation from the Nomination Committee, two shortlisted applicants will receive further assistance to prepare a complete nomination package for submission to the CRC Program for the April 2019 deadline.

If their nomination is successful, the CRC(s) will be released (up to 75%) from teaching duties to focus on developing and implementing their proposed research program.

Requirements

The CRC program expects Tier 2 nominees to be within 10 years of having received their highest degree in their discipline; be excellent emerging researchers who have demonstrated particular research creativity; have demonstrated the potential to achieve international recognition in their fields in the next five to ten years; be proposing an original, innovative research program of high quality; and, as a chair holder, have the potential to attract excellent students and future researchers as well as research funding.

Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process. Please contact Catherine Parlee (research@kpu.ca) at the Office of Research and Research Services for more information.

Applicants must demonstrate how their proposed research program fits with KPU’s Strategic Research Plan, and the importance of the proposed chair to the attainment of the university’s objectives.
