Campus and Community Planning

We at Kwantlen Polytechnic University respectfully acknowledge that we live, work and study in a region that overlaps with the unceded traditional and ancestral First Nations territories of the Musqueam, Katzie, Semiahmoo, Tsawwassen, Qayqayt, and Kwikwetlem; and with the lands of the Kwantlen First Nation, which gifted its name to this university.

In the cause of reconciliation, we recognize our commitment to address and reduce ongoing systemic colonialism, oppression and racism that Indigenous peoples continue to experience.

CCP Responsibilities

Campus and Community Planning

Campus and Community Planning guides the future development of Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s campuses, supporting KPU’s vision, mission and ongoing academic needs.

We're responsible for a broad range of planning and property management activities for KPU’s campuses and properties. These activities involve land use and open space planning, sustainable development, transportation, infrastructure, urban design, heritage building management, public realm design, and community engagement.

We work collaboratively in developing and maintaining critical relationships between the KPU and Indigenous communities, as well as local, regional, provincial and federal governments, to make the university’s campuses transformational learning environments that are landmarks within their communities.

Our Work

  • Campus Planning

Campus planning guides the evolution of KPU's physical campuses while supporting KPU's vision, mission and ongoing academic needs. These activities are guided by the KPU2050 Official Campus Plan (2021). This plan provides direction for major new construction, repair, renovation and adaptive reuse of campus buildings and grounds along with transportation and movement patterns.

  • TFN Farm School

    Sustainability

As a leader in energy conservation for more than a decade, sustainability is part of KPU's ethos and involves many departments. Our sustainable development and design efforts are guided by the KPU2050 Official Campus Plan Sustainability Framework that provides a greenhouse gas emissions reduction strategy, timeline and targets, as well as a framework for sustainability actions in KPU's governance, academics, operations, and physical campuses.

  • Community Engagement

The way our campuses evolve can affect our on- and off-campus communities. Campus and Community Planning community engagement activities invite KPU's employees, students and faculties to provide input into each major planning and capital project. We also maintain relationships with local Indigenous communities and civic, regional, provincial and federal governments as part ongoing engagement efforts with campus neighbours.

    Stay tuned for upcoming events.

  • Major Capital Projects

Campus and Community Planning is responsible for putting together KPU's annual capital plan submission to the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training (MAEST), which provides potential funding opportunities toward KPU's capital needs. We oversee major capital construction projects, ensuring they reflect the directions and principles outlined in KPU's Official Campus Plan.

  • Real Estate

KPU owns more than one hundred acres of property south of the Fraser River. This includes more than 100,000,000 ft2 of classroom, research and administrative facilities. Campus and Community Planning manages these real estate assets, including KPU’s leases and licensing agreements.

Official Campus Plan KPU2050

In spring 2019, KPU began developing KPU2050, an Official Campus Plan to create a vision for the physical development and growth of KPU Langley, KPU Richmond, KPU Surrey and KPU Tech.

The plan guides campus development, over a thirty-year span, ensuring the evolving needs of the KPU community are met. It is brought to life through its implementation and ongoing engagement with the KPU community.

Campus and Community Planning's implementation of KPU2050 includes:

  • Coordinating implementation with capital planning
  • Completing ongoing transportation studies and civil engineering studies
  • Developing KPU2050 guidelines and strategies
  • Continuing development of long-term land use policies for KPU
