Applied Business Technology

ABTY 1111 CR-2

Basic Keyboarding

The focus of this course is to develop touch control of the keyboard and correct keyboarding techniques. This course is recommended for students with minimal or no keyboarding skills.

ABTY 1140 CR-3

Keyboarding and Word Processing for Academic Writing

Students will develop touch control of the keyboard and correct keyboarding techniques and will learn word processing features for writing research papers and reports.

ABTY 1141 CR-3

Keyboarding and Introductory Word Processing

Students will develop touch control of the keyboard and correct keyboarding techniques. They will be introduced to Windows and the Internet and they will learn basic word processing features and basic file management.

ABTY 1202 CR-3

Legal Office Procedures - Corporate Law

Students will study the BC Company Act, and the terminology and procedures relating to corporate law. They will prepare and process the documentation required for incorporation of a company, for post-incorporation, for annual requirements and for registration, and will file the appropriate documents with the Registrar of Companies.

ABTY 1206 CR-3

Legal Office Procedures - Family Law

Students will be introduced to the process of family law in BC. They will learn the preparation and processing of family law documents, including trial procedures and collections procedures resulting from court judgments. Student centered instruction will focus on the legal procedures and documentation related to marriage agreements, separation agreements, division of family assets and defended and undefended divorces. Students will become familiar with the requirements of the Divorce Act and the Family Relations Act.

Computerized Bookkeeping

Students will review accounting concepts and will use Simply Accounting. They will use comprehensive simulation projects to apply the accounting concepts.

Prerequisites: ABTY 1115 and 1135

Information Processing

Students will use advanced features of electronic spreadsheets and databases as applied to business-based projects. They will participate in the administration and design of data management systems.

Prerequisites: ABTY 1135 and 1155

Executive Support

Students will gain experience in office systems that support management success. They will set up meetings, create agendas, take minutes and follow through with assigned tasks. Students will use presentation software to create and deliver proposals, reports, and presentations. Students will apply the rules of business communication, format and presentation with the use of machine transcription assignments.

Word Processing - Level II

Students will create and edit business documents using advanced word processing features. They will participate in individual and group projects, simulating a realistic office environment, with emphasis on efficiency, problem solving, teamwork, and knowledge of the versatility and advanced capabilities of word processing software.

Introduction to Desktop Publishing

Students will participate in the desktop publishing process by examining design principles and producing documents. They will also design and produce personal and professional documents, including letterhead, business cards, flyers, brochures, newsletters, reports, and manuals. They will use advanced word processing features to create and produce these documents.

Work Experience/Project - Administrative Assistant

Students will apply academic and practical knowledge and skills through relevant experience in the work place or through the completion of a comprehensive project. They will complete 30 hours of classroom activities to prepare for the two-week jobplace experience or for the project.

Students will study the foundations of medical terms that describe the anatomy, physiology and pathology of the body systems.

Medical Terminology II

Students will continue to study advanced medical terms that describe the anatomy, physiology and pathology of the body systems.

Medical Office Procedures

Students will be introduced to the administrative duties of the medical office which include: answering the telephone, making appointments, typing letters, transcribing correspondence and patient histories and office procedures manual.

Clinical Procedures

Students will study selected clinical skills performed in the medical office and strive towards achievement of professional competency.

Computerized Medical Billing

This course is designed to introduce student to the basic concepts of computer billing and collections, insurance processing, and appointment scheduling.

ABTY 2110 CR-3

Administrative Management

Students will become familiar with the core concepts necessary to assume the role of an office manager or executive assistant. They will learn key supervisory, organizational, supporting, and management skills.

ABTY 2120 CR-3

Project Management

Students will learn the fundamentals of project management skills to track progress, share information, and close a project. They will examine the planning, creation, and development of a project, and will apply the concepts learned to complete a project using Microsoft Project.

ABTY 2130 CR-3

Advanced Writing Skills

Students will learn advanced written and oral communication skills. They will use advanced writing skills to develop e-mails, letters, memos, reports, and proposals and oral skills to make formal presentations. Students will also develop note-taking skills, using the ABC Stenoscript method.
