COOP 1101 cr - 1

Communications and the Job Search

This is the first in a series of courses to provide students with the knowledge and skills to help secure Co-op placements and to function effectively in the workplace. A Co-op placement is a 12 to 16 week paid work experience in a position directly related to the student's area of study. The objectives of this course are to cover such topics as: Co-operative Education policies and procedures, self-evaluation and career assessment and planning, resume preparation, interviewing skills, human relations in the workplace, work term reports and journal requirements and evaluations.

COOP 1110 cr - 9

Work Semester 1

Students will apply academic knowledge and acquire new abilities through relevant employment in their field of study. They will complete a 12 to 16-week paid coop work experience, monitored by the Coop office. Student will reflect on how their behaviours and attitudes affect their work and their relations with others in the organization. They will also assess their interests and attitudes in relation to their field of study. Credits for coop courses may only be used to satisfy graduation requirements of coop diploma and degree programs.
Prerequisites: COOP 1101. Program specific requirements: (ENVI) CISY 1105 - D and CHEM 1105 - C and BIOL 1110 - C and MATH 1115 - D and ENVI 1120 - C and ENVI 1125 - D and COOP 1101 - C and ENVI 1210 - D and ENVI 1216 - D and ENVI 1220 - D and ENVI 1225 0 and BIOL 1210 - C.
(CISY) C or better in ACCT 1293 and CISY 1105 and CISY 1113 and CISY 1212 and CISY 2311 and CISY 2312 with a 2.33 GPA for all courses in the program.

COOP 1201 cr - 1

Communications and the Workplace

This is the second in a series of three mandatory courses for students enrolled in Co-operative Education programs. The purpose of this course is to follow-up on issues and experiences coming out of students' first work semester. The intent is to assist students in their professional development and to help them improve their communication skills as they relate to the workplace. To this end, students are required to submit Work Term Journals and technical reports relating to their work placements, as well as oral presentations. A professional business communication project will also be completed.
Prerequisites: COOP 1101 & COOP 1110

COOP 2110 cr - 9

Work Semester 2

Students will apply academic knowledge and acquire new abilities through relevant employment in their field of study. They will complete a second 12 to 16-week paid work experience, monitored by the Coop office. Students will explore the significance of their behaviours and attitudes in relation to their work and examine their own working relationships and those of the organization. They will also define their interests and attitudes in relation to their field of study. Credits for coop courses may only be used to satisfy graduation requirements of coop diploma and degree programs.
Prerequisites: COOP 1201. Program specific requirements: (ENVI) ENVI 2305 - and BIOL 2322 - D and ENVI 2310 - D and ENVI 2315 - D and ENVI 2320 - D with a first year GPA of 2.0 or better. (CISY) C or better in ECON 110 1 and ACCT 2320 and CISY 2313 and CISY 2314 and CISY 2411 and CISY 2413 with a GPA of 2.33 for all courses in the program.

COOP 2301 cr - 1

Communications and the Professional

This course is the last in a series of three mandatory courses for students enrolled in Co-operative Education programs. The purpose of this is to facilitate a student's self-evaluation of their second work term experience. The intent is to assist students in their professional development and to further their workplace communication skills. Students are required to submit their Work Term Journals along with their work term written reports. Oral and written reports will be presented during this course. In addition, students will be introduced to proposal writing, difficult interview situations, graduate job market research, and professional employment enhancement skills.
Prerequisites: COOP 1201 & COOP 1210

COOP 3210 cr - 9

Work Semester 3

Students will apply academic knowledge and acquire new abilities through relevant employment in their field of study. Often building upon past employment experience, students complete a 12 to 16-week paid coop internship. They will assess their interests and attitudes in relation to their field of study. They will also prepare a formal report examining one aspect of their work-either on a technical, organizational or interpersonal level. Credits for coop courses may only be used to satisfy graduation requirements of coop diploma and degree programs.
Prerequisites: Completion of all prescribed 3000 level program courses-INFO 3110 and INFO 3120 and INFO 3130 and INFO 3210 and INFO 3220 and INFO 3230 and any one of the following Liberal Education Electives-LBED 3110 or LBED 3120 or LBED 3130 or LBED 3140 and with a first semester (third year) minimum GPA of 2.5.

COOP 4210 cr - 9

Work Semester 4

Students will continue a coop internship, further applying academic knowledge and acquiring new abilities through relevant employment in their field of study. They will complete a further 12 to 16-week paid work coop internship. They will prepare a formal report examining on aspect of their work-either on a technical, organizational or interpersonal level. Credits for coop courses may only be used to satisfy graduation requirements of coop diploma and degree programs.
