ACPE 0025 cr - 1

LPI (Language Proficiency Index) Preparation

The course includes practice in all four LPI components: sentence structure, English usage, paragraph development and summarizing, and essay writing.
Prerequisites: ACPE 0070, or Grade 10 English or equivalent, or permission of instructor.

ACPE 0026

Directed Study: English

This is a self-paced course for students who have Intermediate or Advanced level English skills, but whose particular learning needs are best met by an individualized selection of content. At the beginning of the course, the student and instructor will jointly agree on the specific units to be covered. This course may be taken more than once for different goals.
Prerequisites: ACP Assessment or permission of instructor.

ACPE 0029

Directed Study: Reading

This is a self-paced, individualized course for students who wish to work intensively on basic reading improvement, listening comprehension, spelling improvement, vocabulary development, and/or reading in content areas appropriate to the student's goals. Fundamental, Intermediate, or Advanced level students may take this course. At the beginning of the course, the student and instructor will agree on specific objectives.
Prerequisites: Permission of Instructor

ACPE 0035

Preparatory English for Office Administration Program

This is a preparatory course for students who lack the English requirements for entry into Kwantlen's Office Administration program. The course emphasizes grammar, the mechanics of writing, punctuation, word use, and business-oriented spelling. Individualized writing and reading comprehension programs are implemented as needed.
Prerequisites: Permission of instructor

ACPE 0050

Fundamental English I

This course is designed to teach basic language skills to adults who have had little or no experience with the printed word.
Prerequisites: Permission of instructor

ACPE 0060

Fundamental English II

This is an individualized course covering basic language skills including reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary development, listening, and speaking.
Prerequisites: Reading and writing ability above the basic literacy level or permission of instructor.

ACPE 0070 cr - 3

Intermediate English (English 10)

This is an individualized or semester-based course that includes grammar and usage skills; descriptive; narrative and expository writing; letter; resume and short report writing; listening and speaking skills; and introductory word processing.
Prerequisites: ACPE 0060; or ACP assessment; or LPI essay score 20; or EASL 0065 B- or higher; or permission of the instructor.

ACPE 0080 cr - 3

Advanced English

This is an individualized or semester-based course designed to enable students to communicate effectively, using a variety of formats, in college-level courses. Emphasis is on written and oral communication skills, such as essays, research papers, and oral presentations.
Prerequisites: ACPE 0070, B- or higher; or LPI essay score 21; or EASL 0075, B- or higher; or ENGL 0099, D or higher; or English 11, P or higher; or Communications 12, C- or higher; or appropriate ACP assessment score.

ACPE 0090 cr - 3

Provincial Level English
(English 12)

This course is a study of English literature at the Provincial level. It is designed for students who require preparation for university-level English courses and for students who wish to qualify for the ABE Provincial Diploma. The student will read, analyze and respond, orally and in writing, to selected works of literature from prose fiction, poetry and drama.
Prerequisites: ACPE 0080, C+ or better; or BC English 11, C+ or better; or LPI essay score 22 or 23 or LPI essay score 24 and English Usage Score, less than 6; or ENGL 0099, C+ or better; or appropriate ACP assessment score; or Kwantlen English Assessment placement of ENGL 0099.

Biology

ACPB 0086 cr - 4.5

Advanced Science (Biology 11)

This is an advanced level course dealing with the relationship of living organisms to each other and to their physical environment. The theory of evolution and a survey of the diversity of life are key components of the course.
Prerequisites: English 11 or equivalent; or ACPE 0080; or ENGL 0099; or LPI 22 or higher

ACPB 0096 cr - 4.5

Provincial Science: Biology

This is a Provincial level course that focuses on: cell biology; cell division and inheritance; bio-energetics; human anatomy and physiology.
Prerequisites: one of English 11 or equivalent; or ACPE 0080; or ENGL 0099; or LPI 22 or higher.

Math

Students who wish to register for ACPM courses and who do not have the proper pre-requisites are required to write the ACP Assessment, or the Math Placement Test (MPT). The result will determine the most appropriate ACPM course (or Math equivalent) at which the student should begin. Contact Admissions to arrange a sitting for the assessment.

ACPM 0027

Directed Study: Mathematics

This is an individually-paced course for students whose skills would place them in the Intermediate or Advanced level but for whom the requirements of other ACP mathematics courses are inappropriate. At the beginning of the course, the student and instructor will draw up a list of units to be completed. Resources used may be units from other ACP courses or other materials appropriate to the student's needs.
Prerequisites: ACPE 0060 and ACPM 0063; or equivalent.

ACPM 0036

Preparatory Mathematics for Office Administration

This self-paced arithmetic course will help the student gain the skills necessary to succeed with the mathematics required in the Office Administration program.
Prerequisites: ACPM 0063 or equivalent.

ACPM 0063

Fundamental Mathematics

This individually-paced course covers the fundamental operations of basic arithmetic (whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages) and applies the arithmetic to practical problems. Also included is an introduction to metric measurement, to geometry, and to interpreting graphs.
Prerequisites: Reading ability above the basic literacy level or permission of the instructor.

ACPM 0072 cr - 4.5

Intermediate Mathematics (Math 10)

This course briefly reviews fundamental arithmetic and then covers graphs and statistics, signed numbers, evaluation of expressions, polynomials, solution of equations, and word problems with one or two variables, factoring, algebraic fractions, graphing, exponents, scientific notation, basic geometry, right-angle trigonometry, and metric conversion. This course may be offered either as an individualized self-paced course or as a scheduled offering with regular classes.
Prerequisites: ACPM 0063, Math 9 or the equivalent, or permission of instructor.

ACPM 0077

Vocational Mathematics

This is an individually paced course that provides a mathematics base for most trades. As well as all relevant arithmetic, it covers the metric system, simple equations, graphing, exponents and geometry. Problem-solving is required for all topics.
Prerequisites: ACPM 0063 or the equivalent, or permission of instructor

ACPM 0082 cr - 4.5

Advanced Mathematics (Math 11)

This course covers algebra and trigonometry, with an emphasis on problem-solving. Topics include functions, systems of equations, quadratic and exponential functions, inequalities, and the sine and cosine laws. This course may be offered either as an individualized self-paced course or as a scheduled offering with regular classes.
Prerequisites: ACPM 0072, MATH 0092 or equivalent, or permission of instructor

Physics

ACPP 0088 cr - 4.5

Advanced Science (Physics 11)

This is an introductory course intended for students with little or no background in physics. Topics covered include kinematics, dynamics, energy, and electricity.
Prerequisites: one of Math 10 or equivalent; or ACPM 0072; or MATH 0092.

Science

ACPS 0028

Directed Study: Science

This is an individually-paced course for students whose skills would place them in the Intermediate or Advanced levels but for whom the requirements of other ACP science courses are inappropriate. At the beginning of the course, the student and the instructor will draw up a list of the units which the student will complete. The units will be taken from other ACP science courses, or other suitable materials, as appropriate to the students' needs.
Prerequisites: ACPE 0060 and ACPM 0063, or equivalent

ACPS 0074 cr - 3

Intermediate Science (Science 10)

This is an individually-paced course in which students study basic units on the scientific method, biology, chemistry, physics and one to three elective units.
Prerequisites: ACPE 0060, or equivalent.
