Co-operative
Education

Description

Co-operative Education formally integrates academic studies with paid, full-time work experiences in related positions with host employer organizations. The name reflects the co-operative relationship between the employer, student and Kwantlen University College. Kwantlen currently offers Co-operative Education programs in Environmental Protection Technology, Computer Information Systems and Information Technology.

There are many benefits for students who enroll in Co-op programs. Students gain practical work experience while earning a competitive wage to help finance their education. They get to explore their career choice, develop goals, and learn job searching and career success skills. They also learn to apply their skills and knowledge in the world of work. Co-op provides the opportunity for students to acquire extensive career-related work experience as well as a diploma or degree.

The Co-operative Education Department is responsible for coordinating Co-op work experiences. The Co-op Department works with employers to develop experiences that integrate the skills and knowledge acquired by students in their on-campus courses. Faculty from the department also perform site visits to evaluate the work experiences with both student and employer. The Co-op Department also provides a series of three mandatory employment skills and communications courses for students enrolled in Co-op diplomas. A series of non-credit employment skill workshops is offered for third year students in Co-op degree programs.

Students who enroll in Co-operative Education programs are required to pay additional tuition fees. They should check with the Admissions Office for more information.

Admission Requirements

(to Co-op Education)

Admission to Co-operative Education as a part of the Environmental Protection Technology program is assured with acceptance into the EPT program. Please see the admission requirements for that program in the Program Information section of this calendar.

Admission to Co-operative Education as part of the Computer Information Systems program is Optional/Selective. This means that students must choose to participate in Co-op when they apply for admission to the CIS program, and that the Co-op Education Department applies selection criteria to those applicants, as there are a limited number of spaces available. For more information on availability and selection criteria contact the Co-operative Education Department. For information on the admission requirements for the CIS program please see the Program Information section of this calendar.

Admission to Co-operative Education as part of the Bachelor of Technology-Information Technology is assured with acceptance into the degree program. Students who are employed in the IT industry may use their work experience to claim credits toward the co-operative education component. For information on admission requirements for the Bachelor of Technology (IT), please see the Program Information section of this calendar.

In addition to academic requirements, satisfactory work evaluations and the completion of all mandatory Co-op courses are required for graduation in a Co-operative Education program. Students completing all the requirements of a Co-operative Education program will receive a Co-operative Education designation on their diploma/degree and transcript.

Transferability of Work Terms

Work terms completed in any approved BC post-secondary Co-op program shall be transferable to any other BC post-secondary Co-op institution. The transferability is based on the work term(s) having been successfully completed and given credit by the institution of origin (i.e. noted on transcript). The granting of transfer is given by the institution accepting the student using the regular transfer credit process.

The acceptance of a student for transfer into another institution having a co-op program does not guarantee acceptance into the Co-op program at that institution.

An institution may still require that the transfer student complete additional work terms as part of his/her new program of study.
