Upon successful completion of this program, students are awarded a Diploma in Graphic and Visual Design.

Description

Note: This program is undergoing a review process as the Centre for Applied Design and Communications develops majors for the existing Bachelor of Applied Design Degree. The following program information provides general guidelines only.

This full-time program leading to a Diploma in Graphic and Visual Design provides students with a comprehensive advanced education, which generally begins in the Interdisciplinary Design Studies program.

This education involves the student in the development of essential skills and methodologies, the exploration of design theory, the use of current technologies, history and the broadening of creative and conceptual capacities. The primary focus is to prepare students for the highly challenging and rewarding profession of visual and information communication.

Career Opportunities

Possible career options include two and three dimensional design, multimedia design and traditional and electronic production technology.

Student Profile

Graphic students must be prepared to work hard, adhere to rigid deadlines, show enthusiasm and commitment, and be willing to accept constructive criticism in order to attain the skills essential for employment in the graphic design industry.

Admission Requirements

Because of heavy demands to enter this program, applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as they can. The deadline to apply for admission to the Graphic and Visual Design Program is March 31.

In order to be considered for entry into Graphic and Visual Design and to maximize opportunities for success after completion of the program, applicants are required to provide the following:

1. A minimum achievement of level 4 LPI (This Level is presently under review), or English 12 with a B or better, or completion of a post-secondary English course, is required by the Graphics and Visual Design Program before consideration for an interview.
Proof of completion of one of the above MUST be presented with the application form.
2. Minimum of 30 Interdisciplinary Design Studies credits, or a combination of 30 recommended IDDS and academic credits, or equivalent design related post secondary education, or sufficient comprehensive applied design industry experience.
3. Transcript of secondary and/or post-secondary art, design and academic courses.
4. Personal presentation of a broad portfolio of work, consisting of the following:

Graphic Design, General Design, Typography, Illustration, Layout, Conceptualization (Sketchbook), Drawing, Printmaking, Drafting, Photography, and Painting (if too large, photograph or slide will be acceptable).

This presentation will result in one of the following recommendations:

• Entrance into the Graphic and Visual Design program as soon as possible.
• Recommendation to enter the Interdisciplinary Design Studies (IDDS) program for two semesters and on successful completion be admitted into the Graphic and Visual Design program.
• Entrance into the Graphic and Visual Design program as soon as proof is available that suggested upgrade courses have been successfully completed.
• Recommendation to seek entrance into the Kwantlen University College Fine Arts Foundation program for two semesters, or to locate and seek entrance into specific graphic related courses as suggested by the GRVD faculty.

Note: After successful completion of points c & d (above), students will be re-interviewed by the Graphic and Visual Design program faculty.

The Registrar's Office will notify applicants of an exact date and time for a general orientation session.

The orientation session, presentation of portfolios and interviews are usually conducted at the end of April, to the beginning of May of each year.

Students that are interested in an interview must attend this general orientation session. Appointments for an interview and the portfolio presentation can be made after the general orientation session.

General Kwantlen admission requirements also apply.

Content

The Graphic and Visual Design Program is comprised of a series of strongly interrelated courses. The experiences gained, closely resemble and simulate graphic design industry standards.
