Interpersonal Communication Skills

Students will focus on the knowledge and basic skills for effective interpersonal communication. They will also develop an awareness of their own style of communicating. Students will be expected to achieve competency in areas of verbal and nonverbal communication.

Introduction to the Community: Context for Professional Practise

Students will focus on the development of a professional identity through the examination of various roles in Human Services practice. They will explore ethical decision-making, critical issues of Human Services and current legal and policy trends.
Prerequisites: part-time-HSWC 1110 & 1160, & CMNS 1110.
Corequisites: full-time-CSWC 1130 & 1170 & HSWC 1110 & 1160 & CMNS 1110. full-time-CSWC 1130 & 1170.

Life Span: Change and Development

Students will explore the human passage from conception to death. Drawing on theory and personal experience, they will investigate and reflect on human development, change, and diversity in relation to self and others.
Corequisites: part-time-HSWC 1110 & CMNS 1110. full-time-HSWC 1145 & 1110 & CSWC 1130 & 1170 & CMNS 1110.

HSWC 1200 cr - 1.5

Wellness: Self and Others

This course, following HSWC 100, Wellness: Taking Care of Self, continues to emphasize a holistic approach to wellness through the development of self awareness and interpersonal skills and attitudes which promote self esteem and personal empowerment. In addition, focus is placed on the application of wellness principles in the workplace, balancing work and home life, sharing what we know of wellness and the issues of community and global wellness.
Prerequisites: HSWC 1100

HSWC 1205 cr - 1.5

Taking Care of Self

Students will explore how their actions, thoughts, feelings, and spiritual beliefs impact on their ability to work and live effectively. They will articulate and implement a personal wellness plan. Students will learn ways to take charge of one's life and to feel good about one's self.
Prerequisites: CMNS 1110
Corequisites: HSWC 1210

HSWC 1210 cr - 2.5

Group Dynamics

Students will examine the general principles and processes of collaborative planning and decision making. They will explore the effect of one's own attitude, skills, ethics, knowledge, and culture on self and the group. Group planning, leadership and membership will be emphasized using the framework of self, theory and practice.
Prerequisites: HSWC 1110 & CMNS 1110
Corequisites: HSWC 1205

HSWC 1245 cr - 2.5

Community Living

Students will explore the parameters of "community living" and examine associated legal, social, and ideological principles with an emphasis on developing ethical, professional practitioners who respect the autonomy and right to self-determination of people with mental disabilities. They will explore diverse professional roles, practice skills and support strategies that are required to facilitate individual "quality of life".
Prerequisites: HSWC 1145 and CMNS 1110
Corequisites: CSWC 1230

HSWC 1340 cr - 2.5

Support Networks

In this course students will investigate and reflect on the impact that family systems and social relationships have on the development of self and community membership. Roles and strategies to facilitate the development and maintenance of personal relationships and support networks will be explored.
Prerequisites: HSWC 1240 and HSWC 1260
