Mandarin


Offered at Richmond and Surrey
First year Mandarin Chinese courses are designed for students who have no basic reading and writing skills in Chinese (including all dialects).
Second year courses are designed for those who do not have the intermediate skills in the language. Students with a competence in the language beyond the level of the course in which they are registered, will be required to withdraw. Students who are not sure of their language level should contact an instructor for assessment.

MAND 1100 cr - 3

Basic Mandarin I

This course is designed for students with no previous knowledge of Mandarin or full fluency in another Chinese dialect. It focuses on the development of a practical vocabulary for everyday situations, allowing the student to handle basic communicative tasks in Mandarin. In this context, reading and writing skills are determined by the primary communicative needs of speaking and listening. Students with limited skills in another Chinese dialect will be admitted only with the written permission of the instructor.
Prerequisites: Oral assessment interview and written permission from instructor

MAND 1101 cr - 3

Basic Mandarin II

This course is designed for students with a single semester background knowledge of Mandarin. Its focus is the development of a practical vocabulary for everyday situations allowing the student to handle basic communicative tasks. In this context, reading and writing skills are determined by the primary communicative needs of speaking and listening. Students with limited skills in another Chinese dialect will be admitted only with the written permission of the instructor.
Prerequisites: MAND 1100 or MAND 11 or equivalent and written permission from instructor required for all new students

MAND 2200 cr - 3

Second Year Mandarin I

As a continuation of First Year Mandarin, MAND 2200 offers further oral and written practice in Mandarin Chinese including a thorough review of basic grammar and usage, plus additional and advanced sentence structures and vocabulary. Chinese culture and customs will also be studied. The emphasis will be place on reading, conversation, translation and composition. Students with intermediate reading or writing skills in Chinese will not be permitted to take this course.
Prerequisites: MAND 1101; all other students must be interviewed

MAND 2201 cr - 3

Intermediate Year Mandarin II

Students will build on previously acquired linguistic skills to further the development of speaking and writing skills and the understanding of the Chinese culture. They will focus on intermediate reading conversation, translation and composition.
Prerequisites: MAND 2200 or oral assessment by instructor.
