Health 1: Health Styles

The major emphasis of this course is on the personal meaning of health, related health assessment, and health maintenance. Participants examine significant theoretical and conceptual frameworks of health in relation to self. By reflecting on personal experiences, participants have an opportunity to identify personal resources, challenges that impact health, and recognize the complexity of the change process as related to health promoting behaviour.

Professional Growth 1: Nurse's Work

This course provides an introduction to the profession of nursing. The philosophy and concepts of the nursing program are explore and the history of nursing examined. The role of the nurse in the health care system is emphasized as well as the relationship between theory, practice, and research. Participants are introduced to the processes of critical thinking, critical reflection, and critical writing, They have opportunities to experience nurses' work in a variety of settings, In addition, student are introduced to the concept of family in relationship to nursing and health promotion.

Self and Others 1: Self-Awareness

This course focuses on the learner's personal discovery of self and self in relation to others. Through interaction and reflection, emphasis is placed on understanding how personal beliefs, values, experiences, and perceptions relate to and impact on our experiences with self and others.

Health 2: Facilitating Health and Healing in Families

This course focuses on the family's experience with chronic health challenges, Utilizing family theory, learners engage with individuals and families to understand the family's personal meaning of health, healing, and health promotion in relation to chronic health challenges.
Prerequisites: NRSG 1110, NRSG 1120, NRSG 1130 & BIOL 1160 with a Semester 1 GPA of 65% (2.42)

Self and Others 2: Interpersonal Relationships

This is an experiential course designed to enhance participants' interpersonal communication. The major emphasis of this course is on the acquisition of interpersonal communication skills from the perspective of contextual awareness, discretionary decision-making, confidence and performance.

NRSG 1240 cr - 7

Nursing Practice 1

This first nursing practice course is interactive and integrates all previous learning experiences. The course provides opportunities for students to develop caring relationships and to engage in nurse's work. Through praxis, students reflect upon the complexities of caring for families with chronic health challenges and develop sensitivity toward the experience of health as viewed through the individual's /family's perspective. Students work with families and individuals in the home and community, in agencies, and care facilities.
Prerequisites: NRSG 1110, NRSG 1120, NRSG 1130, BIOL 1160 with a semester 1 GPA of 65% (2.42)

NRSG 1350 cr - 3.5

Consolidated Practice Experience 1

In this consolidated practice experience, opportunities are provided to develop caring relationships with individuals and families experiencing chronic health challenges. Students have opportunities to consolidate learning from the first year of the program in a variety of settings.
Prerequisites: NRSG 1210, 1230, 1240 & BIOL 1260 with a cumulative program GPA of 65%

NRSG 2110 cr - 4.5

Healing Workshop 1: Episodic Health Challenges

The focus of this course is on people's experience with healing with particular reference to episodic health challenges. Participants will integrate theory and concept as they relate to healing. Participants will develop a repertoire of cognitive, practice, interpersonal, and organizational skills to promote healing.
Prerequisites: NRSG 1350, ENGL 1100 or 1110, and a cumulative GPA of 65%
Corequisites: NRSG 2140. Prior to or concurrent: NRSG 2160

NRSG 2140 cr - 7.5

Nursing Practice 2

This nursing practice experience provides the opportunity to develop caring relationships with people experiencing episodic health challenges. Experiences will include nurses' work in the care of individuals and families in a variety of acute care settings as well as in the transition from hospital to home.
Prerequisites: NRSG 1350, ENGL 1100 or 1110, and cumulative GPA of 65%

Health Science 3:
Pathophysiology 1

This introductory pathophysiology course focuses on the study of homoeostasis and how it is altered by physical, biochemical, microbial, genetic, or immunological factors. This course will include the presentation and pathogenesis of disease, the impact of disease on homoeostasis, diagnostics, and the pharmacological treatment of selected health challenges.
Prerequisites: BIOL 1260

NRSG 2210 cr - 4.5

Healing Workshop 2: Complex Episodic Health Challenges

Participants in this workshop continue to develop an understanding of people's experience with healing related to a variety of complex episodic health challenges. Participants further develop their repertoire of cognitive, practice, interpersonal and organizational skills to promote healing. Emphasis is placed on effective clinical decision-making through an increase in student self-direction.
Prerequisites: NRSG 2110, NRSG 2140 and a cumulative program GPA of 65%.

NRSG 2220 cr - 2

Professional Growth 2: The Nursing Profession

This course builds on the philosophy concept examined in Professional Growth 1, as well as examining and exploring the professional practice of nursing. Particular emphasis is placed on standards for practice, and the responsibility and accountability of professional nurses.
Prerequisites: NRSG 1120. Prior to or concurrent: NRSG 2240

NRSG 2240 cr - 7.5

Nursing Practice 3

This course is a continuation of Nursing Practice 2 with a focus on increasingly complex episodic health challenges. There are opportunities for participants to refine their clinical decision-making, and to explore and utilize the expertise of a variety of health team members.
Prerequisites: NRSG 2110, NRSG 2140 with a cumulative program GPA of 65%

Health Sci.4:
Pathophysiology 2

Students will build on the knowledge they required in NRSG 2160: Health Science 3: Pathophysiology 1. They will lean about pathogenesis of disease in children, in adults, and during pregnancy. They will also learn about diagnostics, pharmacological treatment, clinical decision making, and interventions for both specific and multiple health challenges.
Prerequisites: BIOL 1260 & NRSG 2160

Consolidated Practice Experience 2

In this consolidated practice experience, opportunities are provided to develop caring relationships with individuals and families experiencing complex episodic health challenges. Student have opportunities to consolidate learning from the first and second years of the program in a variety of settings.

NRSG 3110 cr - 2

Health 3: Prevention

The major emphasis of this course is an exploration of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. Participants focus on a comparative analysis of primary health care, prevention, and health promotion. They also examine the significance of interdisciplinary collaboration in working with individuals, families, and groups within a variety of contexts. Existing prevention programs are explored.
Prerequisites: NRSG 2350 and a minimum cumulative Collaborative Program GPS equivalent to 65%

NRSG 3120 cr - 2

Professional Growth 3: Teaching and Learning

As both teachers and learners, participants engage in teaching/learning encounters with a focus on health education and prevention. Participants examine a variety of teaching/learning theories, perspectives, and strategies that underlie meaningful interactions with individuals, families, and groups. Participants explore the influence of personal meaning, beliefs, and values on teaching/learning processes.

NRSG 3125 cr - 2

Professional Growth 4: Empowerment

Students will explore empowerment within the human service professions. They will examine the political and socio-economic forces that have shaped the status of women in society and the evolution of human service professions. They will discuss the experiences of women as clients, professionals, administrators, and policy makers with a view to facilitating positive change.
Prerequisites: NRSG 2220 or permission of the instructor

Nursing Practice 4

The focus of this nursing practice experience is prevention, primarily in acute care settings, utilizing community as a resource. The integration of the practice of teaching/learning is an essential element. In addition, participants have opportunities to broaden their experience of nurses' collaborative roles within an interdisciplinary team.
Prerequisites: NRSG 2350 and a minimum cumulative Collaborative Program GPA equivalent to 65%. Prior to or concurrent: NRSG 3110, NRSG 3120

NRSG 3170 cr - 3

Bioethics

Students will gain a fundamental understanding of ethical theory applied to cases in bioethics and will examine ethical approaches as tools for generating and evaluating informed decisions about bioethical issues. Students will discuss cases from health sciences, biology, psychology, or social work in the context of debating general moral principles and their applications.

Health 4: Health Promotion and Community Development

Students will focus on community from a health promotion perspective, emphasizing principles of health promotion including social determinants of health, participation, capacity, and empowerment. They will explore community development as a pattern of community health promotion.

Professional Growth: Research

Students will enhance their abilities to participate in the research process through critically reflecting on various research methodologies. They will develop their abilities to comprehend, critique and utilize research. They will experience ways to transform personal inquisitiveness into a process of posing, exploring and answering researchable questions. Students will explore ways to critically examine their practice in relation to research.
Prerequisites: ENGL 1100 and ENGL 1202 or equivalents, and one university transfer elective.

Professional Growth: Nursing Inquiry

Students will study various modes of nursing inquiry, including scientific, philosophical, and historical modes of inquiry. They will explore the relationships between practice, theory and research and discuss past and present contributions to nursing knowledge.
Prerequisites: NRSG 3140 and ENGL 1100 and ENGL 1202 or equivalents, and one university transfer elective.

NRSG 3230 cr - 3

Self and Others 3: Helping Relationships

Students will develop a conceptual and experiential understanding of the relational nature of caring practice. They will enhance their awareness and understanding of the narratives, values, and intents influencing their relationships with clients and colleagues, and will enhance their capacity for relational caring practices.
Prerequisites: NRSG 1230

NRSG 3240 cr - 4.5

Nursing Practice 5

Students will practice health promotion with a special emphasis on community and multidisciplinary team work. They will identify a health issue and then develop and implement a plan of action to address the issue.
Prerequisites: NRSG 3110 and NRSG 3120 and NRSG 3125 and NRSG 3140 and NRSG 3170 and (ENGL 1100 and ENGL 1202 or equivalents) and one university transfer elective and a minimum cumulative Collaborative Nursing Program GPA equivalent to 65%

Healing/Professional Growth: Bridge Out

This course is intended for students who elect to complete the diploma option of the Collaborative Nursing Program and apply for nurse registration in British Columbia. Students will gain the necessary skills to become professional nurses and to make the transition from student to entry-level professional nurse. Students will prepare to write the registration examination.
Prerequisites: NRSG 3110 and NRSG 3120 and NRSG 3125 and NRSG 3140 and NRSG 3170 and (ENGL 1100 and ENGL 1202 or equivalents) and one university transfer elective and a minimum cumulative Collaborative Nursing Program GPA equivalent to 65%

Health/Professional Growth: Influencing Change

Students will explore ways to influence and create change for the promotion of societal health. Emphasis is placed on selected strategies for enhancing professional influence on the evolving Canadian health care system.

NRSG 4120 cr - 3

Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis

Students will be given a grounding in the techniques commonly used in the analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data. They will engage in the process of qualitative analysis through examining qualitative data, data coding, and thematic construction. Students will also examine a range of descriptive and inferential statistical approaches to quantitative analysis using a computer-based system.

Self and Others 4: Group Process

Students will explore the theories and concepts of group process from a multidisciplinary perspective. They will have opportunities to experience and to critically reflect on group process. The examination of self in relation to group process is an essential component of this course.

Nursing Practice 6

Students will engage in activities which influence and promote change in societal health. They will have opportunities to work collaboratively with others and to use strategies which convey a positive, professional image. Students will experience nursing practice by critically reflecting on experiences, and engaging in activities which influence change for the promotion of societal health within the Canadian health care system.

Health: Transitions

Students will strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the theoretical foundations of nursing practice in a variety of settings involving complex health challenges. They will explore and critique nurses' roles in health-=promoting practice, such as in public health, in community development projects, and in involvement with people with complex health challenges. Students will focus on issues and concepts related to their chosen area of nursing practice.

NRSG 4220 cr - 2

Professional Growth: Transitions

Students will explore the topics of leadership, emancipatory health education, and connecting to the workplace through a series of three workshops. The first workshop focuses on transformative leadership, managerial processes, and organizational structures that influence a nurses's life. The second workshop explores the role and meaning of health education from providing information to critical questioning and engaging with people in an emancipatory process. The third workshop explores the transition experiences from student to practicing nurse as a degree graduate, including identify the gaps between nursing education and nursing practice.

NRSG 4240 cr - 7

Nursing Practice 7

Students identify an area of specific focus for this nursing practice course such as a particular setting of practice, a certain client population, or a specific health challenge. They are then provided with opportunities to develop and advance their practice gaining increasing competence and confidence in preparation for professional nursing practice.
