Applied Communication


All students who intend to enrol in an Applied Communication course at Kwantlen University College must present one of the following prior to registration:

This information will not be used to determine eligibility to enter Kwantlen, but rather to direct students to the courses best suited to their ability. Students with an identified serious weakness in writing will be directed to ENGL 0099 or other appropriate writing courses or to EASL courses.

Introduction to Interactive Communication

Students will learn oral and written communication strategies for use in small group, workplace settings. They will learn how to determine what message details and media are appropriate for specific audiences and settings and purposes, then acquire, organize, deliver, and follow-up that information.

Prerequisites: LPI 21 and EU #4 or C in English 11, ACPE 0080, ENGL 0099

Introduction to Business and Technical Writing

This course introduces students to the dynamic, interactive relationship between context, message, audience and purpose in workplace writing. Students will learn current conventions for correspondence and short reports, basic research and documentation, integration of visual elements into written text, and the application letter/resume package.

Prerequisites: LPI 23 and EU #5 or KUC English Assessment Test placement or Grade C in English 12 or Grade C in ENGL 0099 or ACPE 0091.

Intro. to Business and Technical Oral Communications

This course explores the theory and art of effective speech communication in a business context by giving the student experience in applying oral communication skills to the business environment. Some business writing skills and formats are used, but the emphasis is on speech communication.

Prerequisites: ENGL 12 C or TPC 12 - C or ACPE 0091 C- or LPI 24 or Kwantlen English Placement Test.

Theory and Application

Students will learn how to analyze context and audience, establish purpose and determine message content, medium, visual design and delivery strategy in order to create written and oral workplace messages that can be received, understood, used and retrieved with speed and accuracy.

Advanced Business Presentations and Oral Communication Skills

This course offers advanced training in speaking to a group in a contemporary business environment. It focuses on effective oral communication and public speaking, highlighting persuasive communication, business presentations, and changing technology.

This course is primarily project driven. Students are required to work in CMNS 1220 with the term/semester project on which they are working within their program. Students must possess basic public speaking skills and experience, and be familiar with word processing and presentation graphics software.

Prerequisites: Minimum of grade of C in CMNS 1120, or of B in CMNS 1140, or instructor approval.
