Community Support Worker

Supporting Learning I
Students will examine the interdependence of instructing and learning, and how interdependence relates to the field of mental disabilities. Students will create meaningful learning experiences for people with diverse learning styles. Students will explore and reflect on the concept of caring as it relates to their professional actions.

Introduction to Practice as a Community Support Worker
Students will be introduced to practice settings where Community Support Workers are usually employed. They will focus on observation methods and the recording of behavior in these settings. They will attend field placements and participate in seminar groups to assist them in relating observations to human services principles. Students will be required to demonstrate selected professional competencies during this practicum.

Supporting Learning II
Students will explore the concept quality-of-life and person-centered planning. They will discuss the roles of family and human service caregivers in planning, and develop strategies to support the focus person’s goals. Students will examine the philosophy of inclusion and its relationship to self and others.
Prerequisites: CMNS 1110 and CSWC 1130

Working in Schools
Students will explore the practice of classroom assistants in school communities. They will examine philosophical, organizational, and daily aspects of school communities. Students will consider collaborative approaches for enhancing the school experience of all learners.

Students will have a four week experience in community settings where Community Support Workers are typically employed. They will also participate in seminars to discuss self, theory, and practice issues.

Personal Care - Community Support Worker
Students will integrate theory and practice to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to provide personal care for individuals with physical and mental disabilities.

Supporting Learning III
Students will examine alternative and augmentative communication systems, and behavioural supports to enhance an individual's participation and interaction with other. They will explore models of behaviour intervention, proactive decisions, and support strategies

Professional Practice III
Students will have a five-week experience in community settings where Community Support Workers are typically employed. They will also participate in seminars to discuss self, theory and practice issues.

Developing Leadership Capacity
Students will explore leadership not as a role but rather as a capacity that can be developed. They will create a personal philosophy of how they can demonstrate leadership in their professional roles.

Changing Perspectives and Paradigm Shifts
Students will examine emerging concepts, models and practices in supporting individuals with mental disabilities. They will explore the impact on current field practices, lifelong supports, and on their own work roles and responsibilities.

CSWD 2175 cr-4
The Professional Practice: Service-Learning
Students will apply their knowledge and skills to community based issues and neeeds. They will participate in an experiential approach to learning and engage in on-going collaboration with a community group to create an end product that meets the needs of the group.
