Every student who takes Mandarin at Kwantlen for the first time must bring his/her high school transcript to attend an assessment interview in Room 2445 at the Richmond campus. For assessment schedules, please contact 604.599.2222 (voice mail: 9345).
First year Mandarin Chinese courses are designed for students who have no basic reading and writing skills in Chinese (including all dialects).
Second year courses are designed for those who do not have the intermediate skills in the language. Students with a competence in the language beyond the level of the course in which they are registered will be required to withdraw.
Beginner Mandarin I
Students will develop basic skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing in Mandarin Chinese while exploring the Chinese culture.
Prerequisites: Oral assessment interviews are required for all students.
Basic Mandarin II
Students will build on the basic skills and continue to develop oral, listening, reading and writing skills while further exploring the Chinese culture in the Canadian context.
Prerequisites:
MAND 1100 or oral assessment by instructor
Intermediate Mandarin I
Students will practise and enhance the basic linguistic skills developed in Mandarin 1101 and will acquire additional grammatical structures and vocabulary for achieving intermediate proficiency in conversation, reading, writing and translation as well as further understanding of the Chinese culture and customs.
Prerequisites:
MAND 1101; all other students must be interviewed
Intermediate Mandarin II
Students will build on previously acquired linguistic skills to further the development of speaking and writing skills and the understanding of the Chinese culture. They will focus on intermediate reading conversation, translation and composition.
Prerequisites:
MAND 2200 all other students must be interviewed by instructor.
