Accounting

Offered at Langley, Richmond and Surrey

Graduation

Kwantlen offers both an Accounting Certificate Program and an Accounting Diploma Program.

Description

Option: Diploma and Certificate

The objective of the Accounting Diploma (20 courses) is to provide a well rounded accounting and business education. The Accounting Certificate (10 courses) has been designed to provide education in specific areas of accounting.

Career Opportunities

There will always be a need for individuals who can provide accurate and timely financial data to managers, investors and creditors. As computers, government, inflation, unions and a shrinking world make the business environment more complex, the demand for these "information" professionals will grow. The Accounting Certificate and Diploma Programs prepare graduates for a career in this area.

Financial Managers are not restricted to any specific type of industry, management level or country. All organizations have financial information processing needs.

Future financial management careers include:

·Financial Managers ·Controllers
·Entrepreneurs ·Management Accountants
·Financial Analysts ·Financial Planners
·Auditors ·Instructors
·Internal Auditors ·Corporate Accountants
·Public Accountants ·Business Consultants

Graduates will find that these programs allow them to function effectively in most entry-level accounting positions. Many graduates use the program courses as exemptions toward one of the professional accounting programs (CA, CGA or CMA).

Admission Requirements

Certificate

General Kwantlen Admission requirements apply.

Diploma

See English or Applied Communications course descriptions for requirements.

Note: Students planning to obtain the Accounting Certificate would not normally be planning to continue studies toward an Accounting Diploma. Since adequate Mathematics and English skills are important for a successful career in Accounting, students embarking on the Accounting Certificate are encouraged to take the Mathematics and English assessments, so that any deficiencies can be corrected.

Accounting Diploma

Description

The Accounting Diploma Program prepares students for entry-level accounting positions and for professional accounting programs (CA, CGA, or CMA).

The Accounting Diploma Program is a two-year program, beginning in September of each year. However, students may also complete the program on a part-time basis over a longer period. Evening courses are also available.

During the program students progress through basic accounting concepts and procedures to more advanced topics such as financial accounting, management accounting, finance, taxation and auditing. There are also courses in related subjects such as economics, computerized business systems, marketing and management. In addition, English and Mathematics courses will ensure that students have the necessary skills in these important areas.
