Early Childhood Education - Basic

Offered at Surrey

Intake: Full-time September start

Graduation

Upon successful completion of this program, students are awarded a Certificate in Early Childhood Education.

A student who graduates with a certificate and successfully completes 500 hours work experience under a licensed early childhood educator will be eligible for registration with the Provincial Child Care Licensing Board and receive a license to practice as an Early Childhood Educator in the Province of British Columbia. This qualifies the graduate to work in licensed preschool and day-care centres.

Description

This certificate program is offered over 3 semesters. Semester I will be from Sept. - Dec. Semester II will be offered from January to April/May and Semester III will be from Sept. - Dec. the following year. Upon successful completion of Semester III prerequisites, the student will complete a 2 week practicum in the following January.

Admission Requirements

In addition to meeting Kwantlen's general admission requirements, applicants to the Certificate program must complete the following prerequisites before final acceptance into a program:

Volunteer/Paid Work

A minimum of 90 hours of work with children is required. Hours may be completed in the following settings:

A written evaluation of volunteer hours by the supervisor of the program addressing suitability and appropriateness for working with young children is required.

An interview and/or additional letters of reference may be required by the coordinator or designate.

Recommendations

Recommended immunization consistent with facility policy. It is recommended that all child care workers be up-to-date in their immunization against childhood illnesses, especially measles, mumps and rubella.

Content

The basic program has been designed so that some courses require prerequisites while others do not and may be taken out of a lock step sequence and/or by individuals not enrolled in the entire program. Taking courses out of a lock-step pattern will depend upon seat availability.

In general, the ECE program has three areas of focus:

Semester 1 has a theoretical focus primarily, Semester 2 has an application focus and Semester 3 has an integration focus. Field experiences are a strong component of Semesters 2 and 3. In addition, block practicum experiences are scheduled at the end of each of Semesters 2 and 3 to provide a consolidated practice experience. The block practicum after Semester 3 will be in January of the following year.

Those individuals who have previous successful post-secondary experience may apply for exemption from the CAAS 1100 course, which is designed to facilitate success in post-secondary studies.
